WOOD Died at his residence, three miles from Butler, Monday, January 21st, 1901, of pneumonia, Rev. John W. Wood, aged about 58. The deceased was a well known and highley respected citizen of our county. He was born in Alabama in 1843 and came from Monroe county in the fall of 1877, settling first in the Post Oak Grove neighborhood, about four miles from Fairfield, where he lived some years, and laster, moved to the place where he died. He was one of quite a number of persons who moved to this county from Monroe county, Alabama, in 1877 and '78. The deceased was a member of Co. G., 36th Alabama Regiment, Col. Clayton commanding. He was in Bragg's army, and saw a great deal of hard fighting, and was in many of the larger battles of the Civil War. He was a true, good solider, as he was a man and citizen in private life. He became a minister after moving to Texas, though of late years he did not do regular preaching on account of a throat trouble. He was Moderator of the Freestone County Baptist Association. He will be greatly missed by the denomination at its annual and quarterly meetings. Besides a number of relatives in the county, he leaves to mourn his lose a wife and two daughters. His remains were laid to rest Tuesday evening in the Post Oak Grove cemetery, near the church he helped to constitute over twenty years ago, Rev. E. J. Brown officiating, assisted by Rev. G. W. White and Rev. J. W. Richardson. A number of sorrowing friends and old neighbors were in attendance to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory.
