Freestone Past/Present J.R. “Sonny” Sessions Sheriff 1965-2001 Crouch Cemetery The murder of Wortham City Marshall Jack Barfield by Alf Rushing brought out other things of interest. The Limestone County, Texas Volume I, Part I shows Crouch Cemetery located across Big Tehuacana Creek south of Wortham in a small area fenced and next to the Lindley Cemetery: Jackson T. Barfield has the oldest marker 9-15-l820/12-3-l877 and I presume his wife Margaret 12-23-l819/11-20-l882. Others are L.R. Langham 9-16- 1873/5-5-1874 son of W.H. Langham, T.J. Crouch b/d l891, L.M. Crouch b/d l902, Easaw Crouch l0-18/1900/12-18-1903, W.H. Langham 11-13-45/1-20-1910 S.A.S. Langham 6-22-43/11-13-l906 wife of W. H. Langham, Thomas G. Crouch l868/1935 and Etna J. Crouch l875- l953. Unknown how many if any unmarked graves. This is located on private property and feel sure permission needed. Anyone with information on the Barfield’s and the Crouch and Langham family connections please advise. There must have been some connection with Col Joseph Lindley who was a veteran of the Texas War for Independence who was at Gonzales when the Mexican Army tried to take the cannon back. He also served in Houston’s Army and received grants in 1840 for the land where he lived and later buried. The Lindley and Crouch Cemeteries where Marshall Barfield and his wife buried located near each other on Lindley land. Col. Lindley and his wife’s remains moved to the Texas State Cemetery in Austin in l986 at the order of the Governor of Texas. *** Taken from the Original Sheriffs Report l970 Alerted by citizen Wesley Smith that copper wire being stolen from REA line near Young.
