Areas blocked off impeding my moving around just a small part of what going on at the time. The Sheriffs Office in l965 located in the basement of the Courthouse where the THP offices now. We had no Jailer or Dispatcher and Sue Gregory (later Deputy) took most calls and dispatched from the old Jail. There other problems involved so we moved into the small storage room where the radio equipment had to be placed under the stairs going into the upstairs cell area. This was used until a small portable office built going into the Jail. All work done on the Jail done by prisoners or donated labor, two being used were on felony charges found missing by Fairfield Chief of Police Aubrey Key often checked on the prisoners for us. A large hunt proceeded most of the night with subjects located near Clay Hill after breaking in the Will Boyd Lodge and confiscating alcohol, trailed them by the empties. Work on the Old Jail to try and correct what our illustrious County Judge called “Sanitary Conditions” for over two months with windows repaired that needed (especially those 0n the north where prisoners used mattresses and blankets to keep out the cold), painted inside and out, holes filled with cement, electric wiring repaired, plumbing and toilets worked on, loose bricks removed from top of building to try and keep from falling on some one. All this work done by prisoners who worked day and night and indebted too even if did run off couple times Herd of cattle impounded by Sheriff in Writ of Sequestration and sold later at public auction to satisfy judgment, all this done due to poor business sense. Eleven year old boy “Joy Riding 2am” picked up by deputy. Visited construction sites of plant and large lake being started near Young’s Mill (which will later cease to exist). Advised there should more than l00 employed on the lake and over 400 workers on the plant (These were mostly move in’s and Brown and Root employee’s) THP assisted with stupid major wreck north 75 where passing in no passing zone cost Freestone Co. two of its finer young men, both had young families. Assisted funeral from Wortham to Birdston Cemetery on and off US75 which a very dangerous place to travel then. Pony shot and killed in pasture near Young, believed retaliation.
