Family News of March 2008 Greetings Family Members and Friends, The year is rapidly slipping away. Spring has come to Texas. I have heard wild geese fly over and the Center is busy with bee-like activity. Under the leadership of Joe Winston Rischer, Director of the Community Garden Program, the community garden is being planted. We plan to have the following vegetables in the spring garden: tomatoes, purple hull peas, okra, squash, cushaws, carrots, turnips, mustards, collards, egg plants and cantaloupe. The apple, apricot, crab apple, and pear trees have tiny fruit on them. The center is also involved, under the direction of Carlton R. Rischer, in our project of assisting cemeteries get tombstones for veterans, in fund raising, and plans for the 19th. of June celebration, We hope that you will support us in any way that you can. Personally, I am doing well for a person my age with my health history. I am a member of federal and state programs that enable me to remain in my own home comfortably, instead of going to a "home" or some other facility. What a blessing! Focus upon Personalities. It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you Mrs. Rita Tejada, Director of the Web Site Program of the A, M, Hunter Titus Charitable Cultural Center, Inc. She is Volunteer Coordinator of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Central Texas Agency on Aging, McLennan Community College, Waco, Texas. From the Desk of the Editor SIMPLICITY SEEMS NECESSARY Wilbur Thirkield Bonner-Titus March 29, 2008 In my opinion, we, the citizens of the Unites States of America, should wake up and change our method of electing the officers of our government. Our method of electing officers is too cumbersome, unfair, and divisive. It is too long, which encourages mudslinging and unsavory personal attacks upon candidates. These attacks usually have no relevance to the ability of the candidates to perform the duties of the office. The length of our election period gives to it boredom and non-productiveness. The period is too expensive and seems to favor the candidate who has the most money at his/her disposal, which opens doors to lobbying and selfish corruption. It seems to me that what we need is to eliminate political parties, the electoral college, the primaries, caucuses, and super electors, and adopt national election guidelines that are based upon the principles of democracy. These guidelines should be written in simple terms and should include limitations, especially upon the length of campaigns, amounts of contributions to candidates, and the amount that a candidate may spend. These guidelines should be rigidly and justly enforced. In presidential elections, it seems to me that the candidate who receives the most popular votes should be declared the president. The candidate who received the second highest number of votes should be declared the vice. This could reduce or eliminate the enormous expenditure of time and money that is spent in inner fighting annually by Congress today. This would also ensure that the interests of the people of the United States of America would be served. What do you think?
