My Memory Bag Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009 Having lived more than ninety years, I find that my memory bag is full of memories that influenced my being in one way or another. My parents and sunday school and public school teachers taught us to always show gratitude after had received some benefit from God, some other person or an institution. Another of the lessons that I learned at Mother’s knee, in Hope Well Methodist Church’s sunday school, and Titus Farm School was to "count your blessings"and to be thankful. As I have grown older, I find it easier to counnt my blessings and to express my gratitude to my benefators whomever they may be. The poem listed below is one we used to sing in Titus Farm School, as grace, before lunch. The author is unknown. Father, we thank Thee for the night, And for the pleasant morning light, For rest and food and loving care And all that makes the world so fair. Help us to do the things we should, To be to others kind and good; In all we do in work play To be be more loving every day. Amen Specifically, I am grateful to 1. both sets of my parents for the postive teaching and care that they provided me. 2. churches, schools and other instttions for their patient molding, 3. the United States of America for providing me my home, 4. friends like you for your love and support, 5. God for making the above possible and for allowing me to live a long and productive life, making whatever achievents that I might have made. I am especially grateful to the following who worked to ensure that my thanksgiving would not be lonely and without food: * Emanual Baptist Church, Fairfield, Texas, food (2 lunches) : turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmellows, rolls, and pumpkin pie. * My sister Hazel Grace Mayes, her son Roy and his wife, turkey and dressing, canberry sauce, green beans, sweet tatoes, green salad, cake, and iced tea. * My niece Lula Mae Rischer gave turkey and dressing, turnip greens, corn muffins, squash and cranberry sauce. If you have reasons to be grateful, will you please tell me about them?
