The Picture Show By Wanda Willard Smith For those who grew up in small town America during the bleak days of the Great Depression, the importance and influence of the picture show cannot be overstated. And yes, in those days, it was always referred to as “the picture show”--never “the movies” or “the theater.” In the 1930s, except for the radio and school and church activities, the picture show was our major source of entertainment. I kept a Five Year Diary from 1936-1940 and, along with a lot of other trivia, I recorded every movie I saw in those years. In Wortham, my hometown, the show was located on the south side of main street. It seated perhaps 125 on the main floor and 25 in the balcony. The bill changed on Tuesdays and Fridays with westerns featured on Saturdays (we called them “Shoot ’em Ups”) that were accompanied by cartoons and cliff-hanging serials such as “Flash Gordon” and “Tailspin Tommy.” We often spent entire Saturdays in the show, watching the films two or three times, all for the price of one admission ticket, which in the early years was ten cents, later increased to fifteen. The feature was always preceded by several minutes of recorded music. I remember the most frequently played songs were “La Golondrina” and “La Paloma” (perhaps they were flip sides of the same record). Even today when I chance to hear one of them, I am immediately transported back to that darkened theater waiting with anticipatory excitement for the picture to begin. Popcorn and soft drinks were not a part of our movie going experience in those years. Instead, we often took a candy bar with us. My favorite was a “Black Cow” (chocolate coated carmel on a stick) because it would last for the entire length of the picture. Although many folks had no automobiles in those years, people who did were generous in sharing a ride to neighboring towns where we frequently took in a show: Mexia, Fairfield, Teague, Groesbeck, Corsicana, even Dallas. Thus it was that when the Wortham theater burned in November of 1937 and was closed for several months, we continued to see the pictures. As a youngster just emerging into my teens, I was acutely aware of the stark contrast between my bleak, near poverty-level existence and the lavish lifestyles portrayed on the screen: actors in gorgeous gowns, elegantly tailored suits and tuxedos, classy limousines, beautifully furnished and landscaped homes, exciting plots. I spent a lot of time daydreaming about what it would be like to live among such worldly and sophisticated people. Some of the films were memorable and remain classics. In 1936 I saw “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” the first full-length outdoor film in Technicolor. It was considered a milestone, and I still recall the vivid greens flashing across the screen. In 1938 Walt Disney brought out the first full-length animated film,“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (also in color). King Vidor’s 1935 film based on Stark Young’s Civil War novel, “So Red the Rose,” made such a deep impression on my mother that she cried for days afterward. “Gone With the Wind” was a long-awaited production that I first saw on March 2, 1940, at the Palace Theater in Corsicana. The price of admission was a whopping seventy-five cents. A surprising fact is that (with rare exceptions) most of the pictures shown in my hometown theater in these years were new releases. All had been made under the watchful eye of the Hays Office which enforced the censorship guidelines that spelled out what was and was not morally acceptable for public audiences in the U. S. The Hollywood studios were grinding out these films in huge numbers: dramas, melodramas, romances, adventure stories, westerns, comedies, spectacular musicals with beautiful girls dressed in stunning costumes, magnificently decorated sets, spellbinding dance numbers. All flashed before our eyes, opening up an exotic new world. We copied the fashions and hairstyles, sang the songs, tried out the dances, and imitated the comedy routines. The language of Hollywood became part of our vernacular. In my diary I sometimes listed the stars; occasionally, I recorded a comment about the film. The actors’ names not recorded have been supplied from Internet sources and are placed in brackets. Without the Worldwide Web, much of this detail would not have been recovered. Only a few of the pictures are not listed on the Internet. Movies seen from1936-1940 1936 1. Friday, January 3. Saw “The Great Impersonation” [Edmund Lowe and Valerie Hobson]. 2. Saturday, January 4.
