Freestone County, Texas Bios Texas Senate Resolution #406 By: Turner S.R. No. 406 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 recognize Hoover Carden, who is retiring as an administrator 1-4 and director with the Cooperative Extension Program of 1-5 Texas A&M University at Prairie View; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native of Freestone County, Mr. Carden married 1-7 the former Rena Denson and together they created a warm and 1-8 supportive home environment for their five daughters; and 1-9 WHEREAS, A graduate of Prairie View A&M University, he 1-10 received a bachelor of science degree in animal science in 1954, 1-11 a bachelor of science degree in agriculture education in 1959, 1-12 and a master of science degree in agriculture education in 1964; 1-13 and 1-14 WHEREAS, A patriotic American, he was commissioned a Second 1-15 Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1954 and attained the rank 1-16 of Captain in the United States Army Reserve; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Mr. Carden served as County Extension Agent from 1-18 1960 to 1972 in Marion, Montgomery, and Jefferson counties; his 1-19 talents were realized and he was appointed an administrator and 1-20 director of the Cooperative Extension Program; and 1-21 WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman has been the recipient 1-22 of many honors that include being elected to Who's Who Among Black 1-23 Americans in 1981, receiving the United States Department of 2-1 Agriculture Superior Service Award in 1983, being named recipient 2-2 of the Distinguished Alumni Award of Prairie View A&M University 2-3 in 1987, winning the Community Service Award from the Landowners 2-4 Association of Texas in 1987, and receiving the State Distinguished 2-5 Service Award of Epsilon Sigma Phi; and 2-6 WHEREAS, A well-known civic leader, he is on the Board of 2-7 Directors of the Young Men's Christian Association and the 2-8 Administrative Board of Bethlehem United Methodist Church of 2-9 Hempstead; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Noted for his honesty and integrity, Mr. Carden has 2-11 earned the respect and friendship of his colleagues; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Characteristics of his tenure are ability, 2-13 responsiveness, and the commitment to do what is best for his 2-14 university and his state; he will be missed; now, therefore, 2-15 be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 74th Legislature, hereby commend the career of service of 2-18 Hoover Carden and extend to him best wishes for the retirement 2-19 years ahead; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-21 him as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate. 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-1 on March 9, 1995. 3-2 ______________________________________ 3-3 Secretary of the Senate 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Member, Texas Senate
