Freestone County, Texas Bios Texas Senate Resolution #175 1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 175 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Velma Lee Davis 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-7 citizens of Houston in mourning the passing of Velma Lee Davis, 1-8 who died November 29, 2000; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born in Fairfield, Texas, on March 5, 1924, to 1-10 the late Walter and Elizabeth Ransom, Velma attended high school 1-11 in Freestone County and after graduation entered Rine Side Hospital 1-12 Nursing School; pursuing other educational opportunities she 1-13 entered Madian Sweets Beauty College, Garner Sewing School, 1-14 Houston Community College, and Texas Southern University; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Accepting Christ at an early age, this devout 1-16 Christian joined New Zion Baptist Church and later united with 1-17 Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church; practicing her faith in 1-18 her daily life, Velma gave generously of herself by assisting with 1-19 the church school, the senior mission, the Baptist Training Union, 1-20 and the food committee; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The highly respected retiree of the Houston 2-1 Independent School District Food Service Department was a member of 2-2 the Texas Food Service Association, the Houston Independent School 2-3 District Food Service Association, and 1550 American Federation of 2-4 Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations; and 2-5 WHEREAS, As owner of Lynthesia Dress Shop, she took great 2-6 interest in various organizations dedicated to her community; her 2-7 active participation included the Dad's and Mom's Club of Worthing 2-8 High School, South Acres West Civic Club, Southend Improvement 2-9 Association, Sunnyside Civic Club, Concern Citizens of Worthing 2-10 High School, and the Parent-Teachers Organization of Worthing High 2-11 School; and 2-12 WHEREAS, In her service to her family, her church, and her 2-13 community, Mrs. Davis demonstrated a rare spirit of compassion and 2-14 caring, and in so doing, she made the world around her a better 2-15 place; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to 2-18 the family of Velma Lee Davis: her beloved husband, 2-19 Reverend Clarance L.
