Freestone County, Texas Bios Texas Senate Resolution #1097 By: Turner S.R. No. 1097 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Lucille Riley Steward 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-6 of Fairfield in mourning the loss of one of the community's most 1-7 esteemed and well-loved residents, Lucille Riley Steward, who died 1-8 April 19, 1995, at the age of 90; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The many important achievements of this 1-10 distinguished lady contributed to the development and progress of 1-11 her city; Mrs. Steward generously offered her invaluable leadership 1-12 to various civic and philanthropic endeavors; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Born on January 19, 1905, in Wortham, Texas, Lucille 1-14 graduated from Wortham High School and attended Trinity University 1-15 in Waxahachie; she taught school in the Fairfield school system 1-16 before her marriage to Hugh Steward in 1924; the devoted couple 1-17 provided a loving home for their daughter, Ann, and their son, 1-18 Leighton; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Mrs. Steward was a highly respected civic leader who 1-20 was admired for her devotion to the City of Fairfield; she served 1-21 as president of GFWC Fairfield History Club in 1935 and again in 1-22 1972; as a result of her efforts in researching the Moody-Bradley 1-23 House, it was designated a historical landmark and restored; and 2-1 WHEREAS, A member of the Order of the Eastern Star, 2-2 Mrs. Steward was a Past Worthy Matron of Fairfield Chapter 331; 2-3 she was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; 2-4 and 2-5 WHEREAS, A charter member of Fairfield Harmony Presbyterian 2-6 Church which was organized in 1932, Lucille was a lifetime member 2-7 of the women of the church; she devoted her time and talents to the 2-8 redecoration of the church in the 1970s; and 2-9 WHEREAS, She leaves a legacy of compassion and commitment 2-10 that will be remembered with gratitude by her family and all those 2-11 who had the privilege of knowing this remarkable individual; now, 2-12 therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 2-15 family of Lucille R. Steward: her daughter, Ann Waddell; her son 2-16 and daughter-in-law, Leighton and Lynda Steward; her sister, 2-17 Lura Gregory; and her five grandchildren and four 2-18 great-grandchildren; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-20 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, 2-21 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-22 Lucille R.
