Miss Oneta Shelly spent last week-end in Luna with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Shelly. Miss Gaynelle Coburn of Teague spent last week-end here with friends. Mr. and Mrs. Leval Oaes of Oakes was called to the bed-side of their daughter, Miss Chrystel, Friday on account of illness. She is attending Donie high school, and staying in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Miller. [same issue, same page] Mud Seriosly Handicaps Wortham WORTHAM, Feb. 7 (Sp) - Wortham has been almost marooned during the terrible road condition, which has interferred with the schools, churches, and many activities. Two of the school buses have missing making their routes most of this week. Mackey, will be in Mexia Friday morning for musical numbers at the high school assembly. The orchestra, made up mostly of students of the Wortham high school, is considered one of the best of its kind, and has attracted much attention. -------------------------------------------------------- The Mexia Weekly Herald (Mexia, Texas) October 3, 1930; Page 2 NEW BUILDING AT FAIRFIELD FORMALLY OPEN FAIRFIELD, Sept. 29 - (Sp) - Buildings are an index to the progress of a community and consolidation of schools means equalization of opportunity for rural as well as urban children, Prof. Bonner Frizzell, of Palestine, and Prof. J. C. Cochran, Mexia, declared in addresses before a large crowd that filled the auditorium of the new Fairfield school. The gathering Monday morning was to officially dedicate the building to the education of the youth of Fairfield and vicinity and it was a large crowd that aided with their presence in the ceremonies. Mr. Cochran, Mexia school superintendent, traced the history of architecture, and declared that wherever people became civilized they built. As a community progresses, it builds building. Building he said, is an index to the community as well as the race. He praised the people of Fairfield for their enterprise in providing such a beautiful and useful school building. Equal Opportunity Mr. Frizzell talked on rural and urban relations, and praised the movement toward consolidation which means a better education for rural children by offering them the same facilities as the urban. P.D. Browne, superintendent of the school, presided at the ceremonies. The invocation was by Rev. J.N. Vincent, of the Methodist church. Mrs. P.O. Franch, president of the Parent-Teachers association, told how proud that organization is of the new building and the interest of her organization in it. Mrs. T.J. Hall traced the history of the P.T.A. and the school system in Fairfield, while W.A. Parker, president of the school board, spoke in behalf of the trustees. Mrs. T.P. Lindley was in charge of the music. She also gave a group of piano numbers during the program. The benediction was by Rev. H.H. McKissack. The new building is a remodeling of the old, with a wing added. In the wing is the new auditorium offering a splendid meeting place for the school and community. Fairfield had one of the fastest growing schools of Freestone county, with new districts being added. Meet at Fairfield FAIRFIELD. Freestone Co., Texas, Oct. 21 - A large number of guests and P.T.A. members from all sections of the county gathered at the Fairfield school auditorium to attend the regular meeting of the Freestone County Parent-Teacher Association. The main speaker of the day was Miss Nettie Bonner, principal of the Robert E. Lee School of Corsicana, who spoke on "The Home and School Made for Happiness of the Child." Other addresses were made by P.D. Browne, superintendent of the Fairfield school, and J.N. Porter, superintendent of the Kirvin school. Excellent music and readings featured the program.
