Under the leadership of Coach C. C. Smith, the Bulldogs went through the conference schedule undefeated and untied for the championship of district 25B. Not only did they prove the champions of their district but were also victorious over Marquez, the winners of District 26B, for the bi-district championship. The Bulldogs scored a total of 361 points to their opponents 22, losing only to Teague, a strong class A eleven. On emerging victorious throughout the season, they placed six men on the all-district selection: Billy Willard QB; Curley David HB; Deward LeFevre E; J. D. Price, T; Buck Miller, G; and Alton Front C; others were placed on the second and third eleven. Willard and LeFevre were unanimously chosen. Of the twenty-two lettermen, the Bulldogs have 13 lettermen returning for next fall. So as we leave the Bulldogs of ’40 we’ll be boosting them on to victory in 1941. Due to the loss of several first string men, the bulldogs lost their first game to the Groesbeck Goats at Groesbeck 23-25. The following week they won over the Goats by a score of 19-14. Once they got underway, they were never checked. Playing for the first time in their new gym, they went through the entire schedule without losing a game in it. After winning from Kirvin in the middle of the season, the Bulldogs were defeated by them in the finals of the county tournament played in Teague. Millard Owens, a forward on the team, was high-point man for the Bulldogs for a total of 86 points. Frost came in a close second with 82, and Willard, the Captain, was third with 61 points. They proved a very worthy team in the winning of ten of their twelve games. Another player who was featured in the Bulldog scoring record was Price, with a total of 36 points. With all but four lettermen returning, they have prospects of a successful team in the future. Track The Freestone County meet in track and field events was held in Wortham for this year. The Bulldogs, competing in Class A for the first time, came in a good second in the senior division. The boys who won honors are as follows: 100 yard dash -- James Cherry, fourth 440 yard run -- Curley Davis, second 880 yard run -- Buck Miller, first Mile run -- Millard Owens, second Mile relay -- Willard, Wright, Miller, Davis, first 440 yard relay -- Davis, Willard, Wright, Owens, second 220 yard dash -- Willard, fourth High Jump -- Willard, tied for first Broad Jump -- Wright, third; Richardson, tied for fourth Vaulting -- Richardson, first Discus -- Willard, first (new county record, 109 ft. 10 in.) In Junior High, Lemoine Bounds won fourth in the 100 yard dash, and Billy Frank Bounds won third in the broad jump. The 440 yard relay was composed of Lemoine Bounds, Billy Frank Bounds, Craig, and Oliver, and came in second place. The Bulldogs have prospects for a good team in 1942. Tennis Due to the fact that the tennis courts were in bad condition at the time of the county meet, the tennis teams had very little practice. The tournament was held in Streetman. In the Senior girls division Sammie Joe Calame and Jewel Jean Smith won second. They defeated Streetman 6-2; 6-2 ; to reach the finals. In the finals they were defeated by Fairfield by a score of 6-0; 6-8; 4-6. In the Senior boys doubles Millard Owens and Ersel Young won first place. They defeated Kirvin by a score of 4-6; 8-6; 6-4. Reaching the finals they won a hard fought match from Streetman by a score of 6-8; 6-4; 8-6. Two weeks later they entered the district meet at Waco, reaching the semi-finals when they lost a hard fought match after winning their first one. The junior high and high school are planning on having a strong team on the courts next year. Football Banquet The first social function to be held in the Wortham Gymnasium was the banquet given on Friday evening, January 17th, 1941, in honor of the 1940 football team. It was attended by one hundred and seventy-two students and citizens. Dr. Fred W. Horn, a staunch football fan was toastmaster for the evening. Coach Dutch Meyers of T. C. U. was the principal speaker. Coach Meyers praised the Wortham Bulldogs for their achievement in winning the Bi-District championship. The pep squad presented their sponsor, Miss Mildred Grayson, with a lovely locket in appreciation for her leadership. The gift was presented by Reba Adams, a senior and one of the yell leaders. On behalf of the football team, Acting Captain Billy Willard presented Coach Smith with a handsome leather jacket. He expressed to Coach Smith the appreciation of the team for his splendid leadership and cooperation, without which the team could not have won its laurels. Program Invocation Rev. A. J. This year it consisted of fifty members, and has just completed one of its most succesful years in the history of Wortham. Not only did the football team gain honors, but the pep squad was mentioned as the best Central Texas Pep Squad by Editor Jack Dillard of the Mexia Daily News. Winifred Horn, Corene Turner, and Reba Adams, senior cheer leaders led the pepsters in all of their spectacular performances on the gridiorn. Alta Jo Wright was squad mascot. The flag bearers were Marjorie Miller and Doris Miller. The banner bearers were Jackie Miller and Jimmy Ruth Murphy. Dorothy Calame was Football Sweetheart. The success of the pep squad was climaxed when the colorful, high stepping cheer leaders, dressed in cow-girl regalia, led the brilliant performance in the Mexia gridiron during the half at the Bi- District Championship game between Wortham and Marquez. More than two thousand fans witnessed this occasion, which ended the 1940 football season. Miss Mildred Grayson, a member of the high school faculty, sponsored the pep squad. Junior-Senior Banquet The Junior-Senior banquet was held May ninth at eight o’clock in the High School Gym. The banquet was carried out in a patriotic motif. The tables, spread with white cloths, were centered with bowls of bluebonnets, flanked on either side with red tapers. Red, white and blue crepe paper ribbons extended the length of the tables. Small American flags in gum drop holders served as favors. The program was greatly enjoyed by all and consisted of the following numbers: Piano selection -- Miss Grace Hackney Speaker -- Mrs Sadie Kirgan Stubbs Toast to the Seniors -- Gerald Davis, President of the Junior Class Response -- Millard Owens, President of the Senior Class Class Prophecy -- Charlene Fetty Toastmistress -- Aurelia Morrow Future Homemakers of Wortham, 1940-41 Officers President -- Dorothy Calame Vice President -- Doris Miller Secretary -- Louise Sweitzer Treasurer -- Charlene Fetty Reporter -- Hallye Rae Bounds Parliamentarian -- Melva Harvey Sponsor -- Mary Grace Adams The Homemaking Club had as its yearbook theme this year, “Polishing Personalities.” Among the programs given were the following: “Famous Persons, Looking your Best, When you Go Traveling, The Girl and Her School Life, Parties You will Remember, Dating, and Etiquette Begins and Ends at Home.” A style show was given in one of the meetings and the girls of the first year class modeled their garments. The girls had as one of their projects for the year fillling a basket for a worthy family at Thanksgiving. Canned goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, assorted nuts, and a fruit cake were bought and a most attractive basket was arranged. The high spot of the school year was the Christmas Party. The Agriculture boys were invited and all enjoyed an hour of being together. The Club is planning great and far-reaching activities for the next year, and we know it will be even more successful than this past year. Future Farmers of America Officers Preston Frost -- President Lemoine Bounds -- Vice President Billy Frank Bounds -- Treasurer Gerald Davis -- Secretary Hill Howard -- Reporter Bert Marks -- Watch Dog S. B. Sowers -- Advisor The Wortham F. F. A. boasts one of the most active and largest organizations in the entire school. As Future Farmers of America we are not only a school organization but are a part of one of the organizations in the United States. It is one of our main objectives to train ouselves to be leaders. We realize that we need leaders worse than any other one thing. We also learn to do things by doing them. In the class room we learn the principles of a job, and then go out and actually do it. In the way of other activities, we spent three days at Lake Worth on our summer encampment. We sponsored a Father and Son banquet last February, and had approximately seventy-five people present. We attended the State Fair and several judging contests.
