Freestone County, Texas Social Anti-Prohibition and Prohibition Committees of the 1880s Prohibition is the movement to prohibit the sale of liquor/alcohol. It is also called the temperance movement. Prohibition was a very emotional and active issue that gripped the nation including Freestone County, Texas in the 1880s. Speeches, barbeques, and rallies were held. Committees were formed for the various communities. Religious leaders got involved. In Freestone County, prohibition was a central issue for both African American and Anglo communities. Eventually national prohibition was accomplished by means of the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution. The Eighteenth Amendment was ratified January 29, 1919.
