Wheeler High School presenting "The Parade of Musical Snapshots," Wednesday night, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The program will include songs and dances from our own country and of many other lands. Don’t mass the Hawaiian dancers, the Indian Chief and his tribe who bring rain, sunshine and the moon while they dance. Nine schools have been chosen to participate in this big affair. SHAW County Extension Agent Freestone County FARM LEADERS ATTEND MEETINGS A number of county farmers have been invited to attend and are in attendance at area meetings in the promotion of Texas Agriculture. The 56th Annual Short Course was held at Prairie View this week with C. B. Blair and M. L. Brooks serving as county delegates. Along with educational training meetings, the state-wide group engages in fellowship, and are responsible for the farther development of the State 4-H club campsite at Huntsville. 4-H clubs pay in annual funds for campsite development and cabin construction include: Butler, Fair Oaks, Wortham, Teague, and Furney Richardson. 'BUILD EAST TEXAS' MEETING HELD A new area farm program, to be known as BET, is to be initiated soon. The BET is for “Build East Texas,” and will be similar in nature to the BIG program— “Blackland Income Growth”— in the Blackland areas. Meetings are scheduled for Tyler, July 24, and Huntsville, July 26. Isaiah Garden, Frank Proctor, Millard Brooks and S. L. Dobbins are to represent Freestone County at the Huntsville meeting. 4-H CLUB GROUP CONDUCTS HAYRIDE More than 50 boys and girls from the Teague area were entertained on a hayride by the Furney Richardson 4-H club. 4-H boys and girls included in the planning and execution of the recreational activity on the evening of the 19th were: Cannata Jackson, Johnny Pelton; Barbara Teal, Azileen Demus, and Lonnie Pelton. The Teals served as hosts to the group at the conclusion of the ride. Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Snipes, Mrs. William Clemmons, along with other leaders, assisted with the recreation and serving of refreshments to the group. The Teague Lumber Company furnished transportation. SAFETY COUNCIL LISTS MAJOR FIRE CAUSES The eight major causes of farm fires according to the National Safety Council are defective chimneys, chimney sparks on combustible rooms, unsafe stove and furnace installations, inadequate lightning protection, improper use of electricity, spontaneous ignition, misuse of gasoline and kerosene, and carelessness with matches. =================================================================== The Wortham Journal - Thursday, October 3, 1963 Page: 4 NEGRO EXTENSION OFFICE NEWS By ERNEST K. Planning to attend are Miss Claudia Gipson, Milford Brooks, Rev. D. W. Houston, Mrs. Dorothy Canady, Mrs. Dorsey Johnson and Isiah Carden. SHAW Associate County Agricultural Agent Freestone County The recent four-night Beef Cattle Short Course conducted for the benefit of beef producers was well attended. The Short Course was planned and executed by the Beef Cattle Subcommittee working with the County Extension Office. Teague, Wortham. Butler and Fairfield hosted the assemhly one of the four nights, respectively. Texas A&M University Specialists. along with area and local resource persons cooperated in making the course a success. The committee giving leadership ot the cause was Isaiah Carden, chairman; Jerome Snipes, M. L Brooks, E E. Wheat, Cleo Phillips, and Earl Johnson. Vocational Departments of Teague, Wortham, Butier, and Fairfield also assisted in the planning and execution, Highlight of the course came on the final night when Mr. Sam Carroll. County Judge, presented certificates to each participant who had attended two nights or more. An evaluation to determine the results and value of education training of this nature will be conducted by the committee. Succeeding workshops and clinics will undertake training in management, leadership, career exploration, and soil fertility. A number of economic, educational and teaching resources are available to county residents, to help them raise their living standards and promote the development of Freestone County. =================================================================== The Wortham Journal - Thursday, November 25, 1965 Page: 4 ASSOCIATE AGENT'S REPORT By ERNEST K. SHAW Associate County Agricultural Agent Freestone County 4-H YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOP 4-H officers from Wortham and Furney Richardson participated in a Leadership Training workshop this week. Both leaders and the agent conducted the training for the boys and girls. Leaders assisting included Mrs. Sterling Collins, Mrs. I. M. Slaughter, and Mrs. Vanada Jackson. Subject matter taught included: 1. Planning meetings in advance. 2. Securing resource people for club activities. 3. Officer responsibilities and duties. 4. Leader responsibilities and duties. 5. Getting the most out of club activities. 6. 4-H projects and records. The youth also planned their suceeding meeting in advance, based upon the needs, interests, and resources of their communities. ===================================================================
