Background

Petitions for divorces are a district court matter. The district courts of Texas 
are the trial courts of general jurisdiction.  District courts have original 
jurisdiction in all Texas felony criminal cases, divorce cases, those cases 
involving title to land, contested elections, civil matters of amount of $200 
or more, and any matters which is not specifically given to another trial court 
by law. 

A divorce case is overseen by a district judge at the county courthouse.  Also, 
there is a district clerk and district attorney.

The 87th District Court covers Freestone County and is located in Fairfield.
