The date was 1821, but the exact day remains unconfirmed. He came to the Republic Texas in April of 1840 and applied for a grant of land in Colorado County. He sold the grant for quick cash and appears to have drifted to Galveston. He married Anna Mariah Smith on July 23rd, 1849. The 1850 census of Galveston shows Staines as a "drayman". His mother-in-law, Mary, was living with the couple. The Staines had two children, Marion, born in 1850 and Anna Mariah born in 1853. Mary and her daughter ran a general store prior to the Civil War. In September of 1861, William Staines enlisted in the Confederate service as a private in DeBray's 26th Texas cavalry. He probably took part in the Battle of Galveston as well as Mansfield and Pleasant Hill in Louisiana. He would apply for a discharge, being over 35 years of age, but would re-enlist as a teamster. His family moved to Harrisburg probably after Galveston was evacuated. Staines was on medical leave for 1 week in August of 1863. He was killed by accident on July 22, 1864 somewhere in the swamps of Louisiana. His son, Marion took over as head of the house. Staines widow, Anna, would marry Frederick Wolfean on November 5th, 1870. Wolfean was a veteran of the 1st Texas Heavy Artillery in Galveston. He transfered to the navy in 1862. Anna Mariah Smith Staines Wolfean divorced in 1880 and died Jan. 22, 1901. Additional Comments: I'm looking for any photographs of Staines. I also need to confirm where and when he was born. I need to track him from 1840 to 1850 and determine when he first arrived in America. Family stories put him in New York before he came to Texas.
