Cliften entered the United States Marine Corps on April 1, 1944 in El Paso. He was a Private First Class in the 6th Marine Division, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Battalion. While in the service, Clifton received the Asiatic Pacific Capaign Medal, good conduct Medal, Purple Heart with Gold Star and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged from the military on April 1, 1946 at Camp Pendleton, CA. He was born on May 22, 1926, the son of Calvin Clifton and Eura Helms Clifton.
