Gonzales Co., TX - Obits: Nina DeWitt Eastland ************************************************* File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Deborah Smith http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/tx/txfiles.htm ************************************************* Gonzales Inquirer December 1967 Mrs. Eastland Was Buried This Afternoon Funeral services were held today, Monday, at 2 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Nina DeWitt Eastland, who died at 6 a.m. Saturday in a Yoakum hospital. Mrs. Eastland, the granddaughter of the founder of Gonzales, Green DeWitt, was the daughter of his son, Green Dewitt and Mary Ella Harris. She was born in Gonzales on October 5, 1875, and had made her home here until a few years ago, when she moved to Yoakum to make her home with a sister, Mrs. C. P. Whittington. Beginning early in her life, she served as chief operator for the old Gonzales Telephone Company, remaining on as the company changed hands and until her retirement. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served as organist for many years. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Walter Murphy of Dallas; three grandsons: eight great-grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Whittington, Yoakum, Miss Eloise DeWitt of Houston; and one niece, Mrs. Nina Vance of Houston. The Rev. Floyd Whatley, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. Max Ecke of the Yoakum Presbyterian Church, conducted the last rites with burial taking place in the Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home of Yoakum.
