L. Lard and family can well remember when it was impossible to catch a train here without flagging it. It was that method they used 38 years ago when they drove into Pampa from their ranch home to take a train for Graham [Young County Texas]. Mr. Lard and Mrs. Lard (then Miss Annie Newby) came to this section in '81 with their respective families. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: The ranch mentioned was in northwestrn Roberts County about 24 miles from Pampa. The land was first owned by her father, John Henry William Newby and was sold or given to the couple when they married. He owned other land in the area and throughout Texas and it has been said that each of his children received land upon their marriages. He had over 20 children. The parents of Albert Lee "Bert" Lard were William Thomas Lard and Catherine Staley Chittim Lard who were area pioneers and are buried in Roberts County.
