WALTERS Contributed by Murle Phillips Rhodes, P. O. Box, 121, Columbus, TX 78934 William W. Walters was born about 1806 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the son of Abraham Walters and Judith Thomas. His grandfather, Thomas Walters, Sr., was born in Ireland, took the Oath of Allegiance in 1777 and served as a Patriot during the War of the Revolution. Abraham and Judith Walters went to Henry County, Tennessee, in the early 1820's, where they joined other family members. Their son, William W. Walters, married Marietta Swift (who was born in Virginia) and they had the following children: 1. Phillip, born 1839, Tennessee, died 1892, Texas; never married 2. John, born 1835 in Tennessee, never married. 3. Agnes, born 1842, Tennessee, died prior 1885, married George Over. 4. Amanda, born Tennessee, died 1900, married John Tate (Bill) Armstrong. 5. Arthur, born 1844, Tennessee, died in Texas as a youth. 6. William, born 1840, in Tennessee, died in Civil War. 7. Robert, born 1859, Texas, died 1880, Texas; never married. 8. Alice, born 1851, Texas, died prior 1889, never married. 9. Samuel, born 1849, Texas, died Texas. William W. Walters and his wife Marietta Swift came to Texas in the very late 1840's and settled just east of the Sabine River. He had been in Texas as early as 1832 where he purchased flour, sugar, coffee, and salt at Port Caddo, Texas; a receipt is in possession of a family member. It is thought this material was for troups since his family was still in Tennessee at the time. In 1850 William W. Walters was appointed "Overseer" in surveying roads in Upshur County and in 1858 he was appointed postmaster at Point Pleasant, Texas. He owned and operated a stagecoach stop and trading post which he sold in 1868 to Warren Pierce Victory, this being about two miles east of present day downtown Gladewater. The log cabin of William W. Walters and Marietta still stands under the roof (and being part) of a barn later built by E. W. Clements on land he purchased from William Walters. In early 1865 Marietta Walters died and was buried in the Moseley Cemetery. In October 1865 William W. Walters married Mary Thomas Stone, widow of Manoah F. Stone, of Rusk County, Texas. Mary was born in 1836 in Tennessee, her father being born in Virginia, and her mother in Tennessee. It is thought that Mary was a cousin of William Walters. Mary had a daughter, Susan, by Mr. Stone and she lived with Mary and William until she married Robert McKinley. William and Mary had two children: 1. Sarah Ann (Sallie), born January 2, 1868, married E. W. Clements, died December 27, 1915 2. James H., born 1870, lived near Dangerfield, Texas. William W. Walters died in Gregg County in 1885 and is buried in the Moseley Cemetery beside his first wife and their sons, Phillip and Sam.
