N*ws,-~l regret to inform you that Mr. John B. Ashford, a well known and respectable planter near Courtney, was killed day belore yesterday, on the depot platform, by young Rose, the passport examiner, who travels on the Central railroad cars. The following circumstances are given as strictly true. "While going up from this city, young Rose asked Mr. Ashford for his passport. Mr. A. replied that he had already given it to him, but this was denied by Rose, when Mr. A. said he lied. Upon this, Rose walked away, borrowed a pistol, saying he should take back what he said or he would kill him. Upon the cars stopping at Courtney) he stepped up to Mr. Ashford, who was on the platform, with his pistol in hand, and demanded of Mr A. that he should retract what he had said. When Mr. A. denied having called him a liar, Mr. Rose then lowered his pistol. Mr. A. then remarked that if Rose asserted that he had called him liar, he was a damn liar. Rose then fired, shooting Mr. A. In the breast, and killing him instantly. Mr Ashford has left an estimable family to mourn his untimely death. Rose is a boy about 18 years old." Additional Comments: Rose(Passport Examiner On Central R/R) asked to see John B Ashford's Passport again, A said he had already shown it, Rose felt Ashford called him a liar, Rose borrowed a pistol and Ashford did not take his word back, Rose shot him on the R/R platform according to the Book on the Thomas Jewett Goree Letters this was referred to by Thomas' mother, this was done in front of is John's wife, children and other family members.
