He arrived in Texas aboard the ship Margarette on August 12 1846 with his family and settled in Guadalupe County. He bought land in the Schumannsville area and sold parts of it to other immigrants. Most of these had children who married his children. He married Amalie Walbe in Prussia some time before 1820. He petitioned Comal County to annex the area of Schumannsville into Comal County because those that lived in Guadalupe County near Schumannsville had to cross the Guadalupe River in order to do business in Seguin which was the county seat. He drowned in the Guadalupe River on May 30 1858 and was buried in the Schumannsville Cemetery. When he died his estate listed that he had 5,075 Acres of land being part of eighteen labors of land lying in the County of Guadalupe on the south west bank of the Guadalupe river about 5 miles below the old Nacagdoches road and being Survey W47 patented originally by Ignatius Johnson on the 10th February 1846 and conveyed by his executor Joseph Solms on ? I. Pilgrim on the 8th of Aug 1846 by its said ? I Pilgrim to August W. Schumann now deceased on 20th May 1847 including the homestead and improvements at $5,070. His estate was worth $7,623.50. $75.85 was deducted from the estate. Amalia was allotted $5670 of the estate. Each child received a 20th part of his estate. Those children mentioned in his will were Anna Ludwig, Carl Schumann, Bertha Schleicher, Elvira Loechlin, Hermina Rudeloff, William Schumann, Laura Herbst, Julia Bodemann and Gustav Schumann. When Amalia died she left everything to her son Carl and his children. Note from Lisa Pevehouse : The earliest occurance of this spelling of the surname was found in the ships passenger lists of the mid-18th century and is probably a corruption of the origianal "Schomann" by English ship clerks. Over many generations, the name has been shortened (or in some cases relenghtened) to the present Schuman (the shortest version seen to date was "Suman") with some variations of "Shoeman", "Schuemann" and "Showman". It is reportedly a derivavtive occupational appellation (such as a seller, pollisher, or repairer of footware, as opposed to "Shumaker", which would imply a manufacturer of footware) This seems to imply that the earliest of our ancestors were probably shoe merchants. Anhalt-Cothen existed until 1847, when the prince, Henry, died in 1847, this family became extinct, and according to an arrangement between the Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Bernburg lines, Cothen was added to Dessau. Anhalt-Dessau existed until Leopold IV, who reigned from 1817-1871, had the satisfaction in 1863 of reuniting the whole of Anhalt under his rule. Anhalt became a state of the German Empire in 1871.
