He was a son of William E. Nichols (born 1810 SC) and Elizabeth Hanchey (born October 14, 1814 NC). Elizabeth Hanchey's parents were Daniel Hanchey born 1786 NC) and Sarah Rice (born January, 1794 NC-died July 21, 1873 in Waldo, FL). Thomas' siblings were: Daniel, Wesley, Robert, Sarah Elizabeth, Mahala Marganna, Elijah, William Henry H., John Asberry, Margaret, Joel L., Charlotta, and Sarah A. M. Nichols. Thomas was born between Joel L. and Charlotta. His parents are found in the 1840 Pike County, AL, 1850 Coffee County, AL, 1860 Covington Co, AL censuses. After his father died about 1865, his mother and some of the children moved to Florida, to Lafayette County and then to Palatka, Putnam County. Some children stayed in Covington County, AL and Pike County, AL. Thomas was a single man when he moved to Hamilton County, Texas in the mid-1870's with the Sparkmans and his sister, Sarah A. M. Nichols. Thomas married Sarah Eleanor Goggins before 1879. They had a farm in Pottsville, Texas where they raised cotton, corn, wheat, and oats. They were members of Cowhouse Baptist Church, where he served as a "Messenger" for several years. In an 1896 letter, Thomas lists his seven living children: Claude Lenox; Minnie Pearl; Mandy Carl; Emmer Jewel; Bonnie Dora; Jessie Virginia; and Leonard Hubbard Nichols. He mentioned that two others had died. He called himself a Missionary Baptist and a Democrat. Thomas sold his farm in Hamilton County in 1917 and went to live in Terry County with his daughter, Mandy Carl, who was married to Bennett McClendon. He reported by letter to his brother that they treated him very well. Carl and Bennett had several children: Erma Eugenia; Sarah Naomi; Bradford Anson; and Gerald Bennett McClendon are listed as their children. Carl and Bennett lived in Gomez, Texas. Thomas F. C. Nichols died on March 6, 1921, probably in Gomez, Texas.
