It is approximately two acres in size and is surrounded by a five-foot fence. The survey identified 109 names of individuals buried in the cemetery, some of which have no marker and could be among those interred in the many graves marked _Unknown._ Others might be in the few graves whose markers were undecipherable. Also, it is also quite possible that some markers may have sunk below ground level and are no longer visible. Finally, there were an additional eleven names identified on memorial obelisks who may have been buried elsewhere. The cemetery, which was originally known as City Cemetery, opened in 1836, concurrent with the founding of the city. At that time, it was located approximately one mile from the outskirts of the city. Most of the burials occurred in the 1800's, although a few are dated in the 1900's, the most recent being 1949. The cemetery was badly neglected for many years. As a result, many of those reportedly interred no longer have grave markers. Included among these are several veterans of the 1835-1836 Texas Revolutionary period. In 1936, when the city took back control of the cemetery, the State of Texas erected individual monuments commemorating the service of 26 of those individuals. Since the actual gravesites of many of those honored were unknown, the monuments were placed in random positions throughout the park. The records indicate there are an additional twelve veterans of the Battle of San Jacinto buried in unmarked graves, which were not provided with a state monument. The list below was compiled using a physical survey of the cemetery supplemented by three other sources of information. The first, an undated document in the files of the Houston Public Library identifies 101 grave locations and assigns names to 70 of those graves, the remaining 31 listed as _Unknown._ Names that appear on the list below which include no other information other than the individual's name were extracted from that list; no other reference to those individuals has been located. The second and third sources include a 1936 article in The Houston Chronicle, which listed many prominent individuals from early Houston as being interred in the cemetery, and a tombstone listing prepared by Andrew Forest Muir, compiled between 1933 and 1938. Names on these last two lists whose graves were not located during the physical survey appear as _unmarked grave_ in the following listing.
