H. JONES The State of Texas County of Harris This is to certify that I am acquainted with Mr. A. H. Jones now and for many years past a resident of the county of Gonzales in this state, and living on the east side of the Guadalupe River about eight miles below the town of Gonzales. In the year Eighteen hundred and thirty five (1835) said A. H. Jones, Stephen F. Austin, Peter W. Grayson, my father Robert Wilson, a younger brother of myself, and myself and others, were passengers together on board the Schooner “San Felipe” Capt. Hurd bound from New Orleans to Velasco, Texas. Upon the arrival of said vessel off the bar at the entrance to Velasco early in September 1835 we learned that the Mexican War vessel “Correo” Capt. Thompson was cruising along the Texas coast, and was then in the offing near by, and would no doubt attack the “San Felipe”. A number of persons from Velasco came on board to take part in the expected battle – A. H. Jones, Robert Wilson, my brother, myself and others remained on board and participated in the battle between the “San Felipe & Correo” which came off at night of the day of our arrival near Velasco and resulted in the capture of the Mexican Vessel next day, aided by the small steamer Laura from Velasco. I suppose A. H. Jones to be 55 or 60 years of age. I cannot speak positively of his age. I believe the said A. H. Jones to be justly entitled to a pension for service under the Pension Act approved August 13th, 1870. Houston Texas October 5th 1870 Signed: James T. D. Wilson State of Texas County of Harris Before me A. R. Taylor Clerk of the District Court in and for said County and State this day personally appeared James T. D.
