He was a member of the St Andrews United Methodist CHurch, a 50 year member of the Cade Rothwell Masonic Lodge #1151 AF & AM and 50 year member of the North Side Chapter $6512 of the O. E. S. He served as worshipful master of Cade Rothwell Masonic Lodge from 1949-1950 and he also served as treasurer and scecretary and was the worthy patron on the O.E.S. from 1951 to 1952. Life certificate in Esoteric Work in 1969. District Deputy Grand Master Distric 30E most worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas in 1971, Scottish Rite of Freemasonary of Texas Valley of Houston Grand Cross of Color 1972 International Order of Rainbow for Girls, Houston Chapter No 488 R.A.M., Sam Houston Council No 403 R. & S.M., Houston Commandery No. 95 K.T., super excellent master Sam Houston Council No. 403, the Royal Order of Scotland, K.C.C.H. Scottish Rite Masonary, High Priest Houston Chapter No. 488 R.A.M., thrice Illustrious Master Sam Houston Council No. 403 R.&S.M., Commander Houston Commandery No 95 K.T., Knights of the York Cross of Honor, The Order of High Priesthood for the State of Texas, Order of the Silver Trowel Royan and Select Master Gulf Coast York Rite College No.106 and Grand Sentinel Grand Council of Royal Select Masters of Texas 1983-1984. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 eyars, Janie M. Newton and daughter, Mary Jane Garies. Survivors include his sons, James V Newton and wife Loretta May of Pinehurst TX and John H Newton Jr.; son-in-law, Irwin E Garies both of Houston, 11 grandchildren and 20 great granchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday, July 25, 1995, at the chapel of Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. Masonic Graveside Services and Burial will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery under the auspices of the Cade-Rothwell Masonic Lodge #1151 A.F.&A.M.
