It is with great joy that we know he has entered into the presence of his Lord. Jack was born in Plymouth, PA on August 10, 1929, to Louis and Alice Schmidt. He is survived by his beloved wife Billie (Wigley) (Barmore) Schmidt, son John A. Schmidt and Sandra Ashworth, daughter Janet Svoboda and husband James, and daughter Gretchen Netzband and husband Mike. Also remaining to grieve are his grandchildren Kristen Sledge and husband Jonathan, Matthew Svoboda, Jacob Netzband, Jessica Netzband, and Heidi Cress and her children Bryce, Stevie, and Cassey, his mother-in-law Bess Wigley, sister-in-law and brother- in-law Gayla and Mike Roberts and their children Melissa Roberts and Lt. Commander Michael Roberts, his wife Amanda, and their daughter Faith. After graduating from Plymouth High School, Jack enlisted in the Air Force. He rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant and was then accepted into Officer Candidate School. He served his country faithfully and proudly for 20 years, before retiring at the rank of Major. After retiring from the Air Force, Jack worked for Lockheed supporting the space program. Later, he and a co-worker decided to "Go and have some fun." He then served as Executive Vice- President of A&J Enterprises. His "FUN" came from being a flight instructor and teaching others about the joy of flight. Jack's favorite pastime was spending time with Billie. It was rare to see one without the other, and even rarer to see them when they were not holding hands. Jack was a good man and a gentle soul. He had a quiet way about him that is rarely seen today – he was truly an "Officer and a Gentleman". He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Pasadena Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at South Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Asbury United Methodist Church Building Fund.
