Harrison Co. Tx - William Grimes Grimes Records #### January 1859 Wm. Grimes Travels January 3, 1859. I leave home for Alabama Monday morning. I went to Scotts depot, took the car for the Lake. Arrive at Swansons at sunset. The evening fair and cold. Stay at the hotel kept by Roberts, a dirty place. January 4. Cold and frosty. Pay 75cts for night stay. Steamer Starlight came down this morning. Take on cotton at $1.75 per bale, passengers $15. We remain here 24 hours taking on cotton. January 5. Cloudy, warm, rained little, turns cold, ugly. We leave, stop in Sight. Take on more cotton at Mooringsport, lay there, thunder and much rain. January 6. Cold and windy, some rain and sleet. Wander about lake, get fast. Very cold & windy, get off. Jany 7. Cold & windy, leave Albany, strong N. wind. Go down two miles, get fast. Stay in open lake 48 hours. Throw overboard 80 bales. Jany 8. Fair and cold, wind N. strong. Try to pull off. Sally Robertson passed up. Steamer Hope came about sunset. Took off 400 bales. Worked all night. Jany 9. Sunday. Fair & cool. Get steamer off, cotton on board and leave at 3 P.M. for Shreveport. Arrive there about 9 oclock. Remain all night. Jany 10. Frosty, clouds up. Take on cotton, leave at 1 P.M. Run very slow and lay up for the night. Jany 11. Cloudy rainy morning & all day. Break tiller again. Broke last night. Broke tonight, lay up. Made new one, lay up for the night. Jany 12. Warm & cloudy. Take on cotton & passengers. Pass LeCompter 1 o;clock, Grand Ecore before sunset, took on dry hides. This is high rock bluff . Dark rainy night. Pilot & engineer fight. Jany 13. Rainy morning. Stop at Alexandria and leave again about noon. Drizzly evening. Jany 14. Heavy fog, run slow. Get into Miss. Before daylight this morning. Clears up. Pass Bayou Sarah 11 ½ oclock & Baton Rouge 1 oclock, east side of river. See many steamers after night. Jany 15. Fair & fine at New Orleans. Arrive here 2 oclock this morning. I go to Marsdon Hotel, get breakfast & dinner, pay $1.25. Fine evening. Leave N.O. Jany 16. Sunday. Fair & fine. Arrive in Mobile 9 A.M. Stop at McCurdy House for the day, bill $1.25. Jany 17. Fair & fine. Go to Col. Bufords. Look about town. Jany 18. Fair & cool. Buy coat $10. vest $3.75, hdkf $1.75, gloves$1.00. Leave Mobile at 5 oclock on Steamer Magnolia, $4.00. Jany 19. Cold & frosty. Get off at Peavys. Eat breakfast, go to Atchersons & stay all night. Warmer and cloudy. Jany 20. Warm and cloudy. Get mule, go to Dr. Rains for dinner and up to Jos. in evening. Sprinkle rain. Jany 21. Warm, thundered, rained & blew hard. Close, dark evening, turns very cold, wind N., strong. I go to Jordans. Stay all night. Jany 22. Cold and windy, fairs off. Go the rounds by Dubose & Nashs stores and U.S. Simpsons, stay. Jany 23. S. Thick ice all day. I go to Whites. Jany 24. Fair & very cold. Ride around to see men that owed me and stay at J.P. Simpsons. Jany 25. Sun & cloud. Go to Mrs. Listers, Turners and to Williams to stay. Mule threw me and hurt me. Jany 26. Rained little, good day, go to Whites. Jany 27. Cloudy, rained some. Look about plantation. Rained all evening and high water upset fence & bridges. Jany 28. Ugly wet morning. Go to Worshams. See men that owe me. Collect very finely. Jany 29. Thunder & rain last night, warm & cloudy. Settle with White this morning and go to Joes. Jany 30. Rainy morning, holds up & clears off. Go to Cups and Pages. Make a final settlement with all. Jany 31. Warm but fairs off. I leave Joes and the country. Creeks high, bridges upset. Dine at Rains. Stay at Alberts. Feb. 1. Warm & cloudy. To Peavys for steamer. None today. Feb. 2. Rain & thunder last night. Steamer passed before day. In evening Steamer Vivian came. Got on board, take Dr. Rain and some cotton, fare $3. No sleep. Feb. 3. Fair & cool. Arrive at Mobile. After breakfast go to Roper house and to Russells in the evening. Feb. 4. Cold & frosty. Return to City. Pat at Roper House, 75 cts. Leave Mobile 1 ½ oclock, fair & fine, far $5. Feb. 5. Arrive on Florida before daylight. Take cars to depot, pay 25cts. Walk to levee. Go on Steamer Lula Touro, fare $15. Warm & cloudy. Trade all day. Leave New Orleans at 5 oclock, good weather, we run. Feb. 6. S. Clouds & sun. cool & smoky. Pass Baton Rouge at 11, Bayou Sarah 2 and Red River mouth 10 oclock P.M. Feb. 7. Fair & cold. Alexandria noon. Grand Ecore 5 A.M. Feb. 8. Warm and cloudy, looks like rain. LeCompter at 7 A.M. Thunder shower. Spring like weather. Feb. 9. Cool & cloudy, fairs off. Arrive at Shreveport 11, cold. Feb. 10. Fair & frosty. Remain all day. Send out my things by Brackens wagon, pay $13.75. Go on Larkin Edwards for Swansons, pay $5. Remain at Shreveport. Feb. 11. Warm & cloudy. Leave Shreveport at 2 oclock. Go up the lake. Lay up at Mooringsport for the night. Feb. 12. Fair & cool. Start early. Pass over the lake to N. side, put our fre ight and return. Arrive at Swansons in time for cars. Pay $1. Get to Scotts early. Lister & Tootto came from lake with me and I arrived at home before night on Saturday, 12th February after an absence of six weeks. Journal of Wm.
