Grimes, Esqr. Arleston, Texas Dear old friend, Yours of 1st May rec'd In due time & read with much pleasure. I assure you was a great surprise to receive a letter from an old. friend that I had lost sight of. Well to answer all you would like to know of our people would take a long letter. Well to begin with, all of my own family are dead, except Elizabeth, Ellza & Myself. You know Elizabeth married Bishop Cuppa. They live near Buckatuna Station, Miss. Ellza lives in Canton, Van Zant Co., Texas. Ero. William & his wife Jane died about 3 years ago in a week of each other, Jane died first. Sarah died 1st last Deer. I rec'd a letter this morning from her husband, Mich DuBose, he is almost deaf & very feeble. The balance of the children's families, I know nothing about, lost sight of them entirely. I hear often from the old. home of my childhood thro a half brother of mine. My father married again in 1863 to Jane Brown & had two children, a. girl & boy. The boy is name Jesse & married B. K. Smith's daughter. He tells me that old Daniel Wllliamson is fetill living at his old place & works at blacksmithing yet. Yes I know all about the Summers at Sulphur Springs. We came to Texas together. I lived there 12 years myself. Sallie, my 1st wife died there. All of the Summers family are dead except 4 children, White, Barker, Fannie & Mary. I have 8 children, 4 boys & 4 girls, all married, except one, a girl. I have 5 grand-child-ren. I married again 11 years ago. No children by my last wife, we live alone. My youngest daughter lives with her oldest sister & is teaching. She has an art class in Texas & is a fine musician. Well I am 58 years old the 10 day of next Oct. & still feel young & stout. I weigh 205 Ibs & healthy as a buck. I have been indoors, never exposed myself much only during thewar & not much at that. I still have to work to keep going but don*t take much to do us. Well I have met your nephew here. He reminds me so much of Jo, his father. He has been in several times & tells all about the family. Lockwood lived just across the street from me about 6 months, but I nwver met his wife or did not even know she was a Grimes. I have met the Lockwoods a 1000 times but am not acquainted with them. They don't know anyone, so I wont push myself on them. I think your nephew is a Grimes complete. Did. you know that White Summers married Lucie Ainsworth, your sister enlaws daughter's page 2 Well they seperated, there was one child, a daughter. They "brought her to Texas. She married a man, I think, "by the name of Henry & live near Center in Shelby Co. He is related to old Uncle William Smith or some of his family, I don't know which. Lucie still lives in Ala. She married a man by the name of Cunningham. This set of Cunninghams are old Alabamians, lived near the old Beaver Ponds. He owns the old mill up near old man Beards place. Well do you know I receive letters from my old set of negros yet. They can tell me more than anyone back in old Ala. Nearly all the old set of negros are dead, those you know. Dr. Ben Worsham was to see me not long ago. Well, William, I will close. Is quite cool here today, I have a fire in my shop. Write again & ask anything you want to know. Kindest regards to you.
