Harrison Co. TX - William Grimes Papers ¤¤¤¤¤¤ Hopkins Co., Texas July 51, 1906 Dear William, I thought perhaps you would not care if I wrote you a short letter this morning as I suppose you are not very busy and. would have time to read it. I will go back to where I left you the day I and Floy left you at your house. When I got home I turned the horse loose in the yard to eat grass while I and F. went through things in the house. I had many old papers and relics to look over which consumed a good part of the day. We had a lunch which we eat on the gallery and left in time to get back to Fogle's before night, We stayed there until Friday afternoon and went to Silas W's Saturday afternoon. We went to DeBerry. Sunday; to Bethel to Sunday School and preaching. From there to E. Fields to Mr. Furrh's. Stayed there for Sunday School, then back to Silas. Monday left. Stopped at the grave yard. Looked that through. Get to Fogle's about 9 a.m., where we got word that Maggie was quite sick. We got to Robt's at 12:50 p.m. Eat dinner and fed the horse and went to town. Here we got letter M. was better. I had a broken tooth filled. We called on Sister Downs. Spent an hour and out to Robt's for the night. Left about 11 a.m. Went by to see Daisy. On to town to get the two o'clock train for J. Vllle. Left the horse and buggy at Arthur's. Lula was in bed sick. We got off about 2:30 p.m. Arrived at J. Ville at 7 p.m. Was met at the train by Ed and we were sent down in a carriage. We found Maggie able to be at light work and con- tinued to improve. This was July 17th. I remained there until 25th, which was last Wednesday. I left on the Cotton Belt at about 10:30 am. Was at Tyler about about 12 a.m., where I lay over about an hour and a half and change cars and take the Katy for Sulphur Springs, about 47 miles. I bought my ticket at J. Ville all the way through 105 miles, $3.15. I wrote Euphia I would be there on 25th. She got the letter at 2 p.m. and was on hand to receive me. Mary and Ed, A. , were with her and we were soon on our way out to Mary's, two miles from town. But here I met several of the boys, one being Jack (Jerry) who went out and stayed all night. He had a son. Bill, in the race for tax collector. He got beat. I and Mary spent Thursday with her son, Jim Anderson. He has a wife and children. We had a good dinner and fine melons. I stopped awhile at Ed Anderson's. He has a wife and three children. Friday I was visited by Barker Summers of Ala. and I lay over to eat peaches, grapes, melons; etc. Saturday I went with the boys to town to the election, Here I met Bill and son Archer, Jo, son of Ab, whom I met at Austin. He has a married sister, Mrs. Boggs, in town here. Jo took me for dinner and here I met his little sister Lucy. I was introduced to many of the prominent men of the place. The Sunday paper had an article in it of my being in town to visit my visit. I went back to Mary's after dinner and was visited by Mrs. Litus, a daughter of George Tiller. We had much talk for each other. Her husband was elected treasurer Saturday. Beat Summers 4,000 votes. page 2 Saturday evening I and Mary left in the rain to visit Ab, at Cumby. Here Maria was staying. As I walked into the coach I was met by Robt. McC. and Lillie and the boys. Also, Stephen McClaran and daughter. They were on a two weeks visit to Jim Joyce. Ab said he would go after them and take them to his bouse on a visit. L. brought my walking cane which I had written her to do. On Sunday morning we re- turned to Sulphur Springs, bringing Maria with us. We were taken out to Mary's, where we stayed until yesterday morning when Jack came after us to take us to his house. About 25 miles to Sulphur Bluff. We found his son Bill in town very sick. He concluded best to try to carry him home where they could give him good attention. So he brought I and M. here to BiLL's to stay and he go back and carry his boy home last night by moon shine. I am thinking of going from here to Paris tomorrow and come back here to finish my visit. I am trying to get one of these girls to go with me, but I fear I will not succeed. You have missed the best thing you have ever had a chance at by not being with me on this trip. Bill's wife and Maria have been talking to me since I commenced writing, sending word for you to come. We had the best music here last night you ever heard. Bill on violin, Ruth, age 18 years, on guitar, Glenna, age 11 years, second, on organ, two young men to sing. Bill can play fine. All are church members, I believe, and the best folks you ever saw, and the prettiest girls. It would be Impossible for me to tell you half I want to in this letter, and I get it in so badly scattered that I am ashamed of it. Maria received a letter since we got here yesterday from Dr. B.M.W. He said Alma Timmlns was in Austin. Had operated on her for tumor and was doing well. Her mother (Eilza) was with her. Ed. G. received a letter from Will the morning I left, telling us Tom was dead. Died on Friday night, 20th, of heart failure. He eat his supper and went to bed as usual. Was taken and was dead before his wife could light the lamp. The news was very sad. I would be very glad to hear from the election in Harrison as soon as possible. Perhaps you can write me at Paris, 740 W. Houston Street. I think I will be there tomorrow. We stopped yesterday at the gate to see Fannie Coffee now Fannie Summers. She is a widow worth $20.000. She wants to marry. Has no children. Good looking, except front teeth very prominent. And face thin but rosy cheeks. She has one of Barker's girls living with her and near her is Maria Houston, a daughter of Alfred Gough, who married Martha Coker. I never stopped to see her, Well, I will close now. Just 10 a.m. Mail due here at 11. All live on rural routes. You must do the beat you can with this as I have no time to read it over. Good-bye, J. W.
