Harrison CO. TX - William Grimes Papers ¤¤¤¤¤¤ Copy of a letter from J. W. Grimes to Wm. S. Grimes. Austin, Texas Jany. 1st, 1906 Dear Wm. I rec'd your letter some days ago. The contents was soon devoured. To say I was glad to receive it would be expressing myself very mildly. At the same time I got one from E. W. telling of Emma A's death which I was very sorry to hear. They were too slow In getting a Dr. for such a serious disease. You will see by the heading of this I am in Austin. After deciding to come the time set, the weather cut a small figure in the trip. I wrote Ben last Monday to know if Maria was still here. He replied by return mall on Tuesday it came that she was here asking me to pay them the comtemplated visit and let him know and he would meet me at the depot. Sunday was set and at an early hour it commenced to snow, sleet and rain. We got our good lady friend. Miss Mabel Wells, to phone for us a carriage from the livery stable. It came in a few minutes and we (Maggie and myself) were at the station in a few minutes. The train was an hour late, we left at 12M. The snow still falling but we passed out of it by the time we got to Palestine. The delays were so frequent at R.R. crossings, passing trains, junctions etc we lost another hour before we got here Due at seven got here at nine. I had Ed wire Ben I was on the way. He was gone to San Antonio. His wife, son and her sister met us and came to me as the man she was looking for. She armed me to a street car for a three mile ride out home. This ride came near making me sick but It was soon over and I was where I could lay down. M. met me and kissed me. The scar on her lip was about all that looked natural. Maggie W. took us on a tour to see the town yesterday evening. We went through the Capitol, Confederate Home, here we were taken around by Geo. Webb. We crossed the Colorado to the Deaf and Dumb Asylum. We returned, then took a ride with Ben in his auto. You bet that made me cool going so fast. He makes a trip of over 50 miles and return in a day. Today we were taken through the Insane Asylum. Saw everything going on in that department. It takes four barrels of flour per day, 95 gallong of coffee at a meal, 950 eat at a time. Here they cut, make and wash for all. Time and space will not permit my telling more In this letter Jo. Worsham has just come in from home. All are talking while I try to write. You know how this is. They rec'd your letter and read it to me. I wrote them of Emma's death 25th ult. I want to call to see Tony on return trip which must be by 4th inst, time out on that day, then for home. All send love to you and request you to come and I say come by all means. You can do so for less than $20.00. It would do you good to come. It has been the grandest visit I ever had, yrs, J. P. S. They have just phoned Tony, he Is at home and requests me to call. which I will do. Now 1:30 P.M. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
