Jan 1 -- Death sneaked in a final punch here last night. 29 minutes before the New Year was ushered in when a highway accident 5 miles west of Haskell took the lives three elderly people and sent three other persons to the hospital with serious injuries. The dead are: Paul Zahn, Sr., 78 a retired Haskell farmer. Mrs, Paul Zahn, about 78, his wife. Albert Louis Zahn, Sr., 53, a carpenter, 3302 South Beckley St., Dallas. Injured are: Albert Louis Zahn, Jr., 24 of 1522 Presidio St., Dallas. Amelia Zahn, 12, of Littlefield. Only slightly injured was Jerry Warren Zahn, 8, of Haskell. he suffered "only a bump on the head and required no treatment," investigating officers said. Noise Heard Amelia and Jerry Warren Zahn are children of Herman Zahn of Oakland, Calif., and grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zahn, Sr. The injured were brought to a Haskell hospital in an ambulance summoned from Rule. Noise of the over-turning automobile attracted the attention of Dale Anderson and Mrs. J. B. Parmelly, members of farm families living on the highway near where the accident happened. They summoned the ambulance. The three persons were dead when the ambulance arrived, the driver told Highway patrolman Jerry Bright and Ray Craft of Stamford who investigated. They were assisted by Ollie Kittley, City Marshall at Rule. Albert Zahn, Jr., was still in a semi-conscious condition Saturday. Mrs. Albert Zahn, Sr. was described as being seriously hurt. The accident occured last night at 11:40 on a straight stretch of the highway, the investigating officers said. No other vehicle was involved. Car Leaves Pavement Indications were, said the two patrolman, that the car, in which the family was traveling to Littlefield, left the pavement, where the driver lost control, swerved back onto the roadway, then started a series of sommersaults (sic), landing upright about 100 feet down the highway from the point where it first turned over. Wreckage was strewn along the highway for a distance of 100 feet, the patrolman said. The accident brought to five the highway death toll in the Abilene District of the State Highway Patrol during December and the total for the year to 66, less than were killed on highways in the district in 1947. Bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zahn, Sr., residents of the Haskell area since 1908, and of Albert Louis Zahn, Jr. are held at Holden Funeral Home, here from which arrangements are to be announced. Survivors of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zahn, Sr., are Paul, Jr., and Bill Zahn of Littlefield, Walter, Herman and Herbert of Oakland, Calif,; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Merchant of Haskell and Mrs. Joe Koiber of Littlefield.
