Barton at his home last Wednesday near this place cast a gloom over the entire community . He was a good citizen, an upright honest man and during his long residence in Hays county had made many warm, true frends.(spelling is original) The sympathy of all goes out to his grief stricken family and may God give them strength to bear their sorrow. The other obit is Mattie Barton's. Gone to Rest It is our sad duty to record the death of Mrs. Mattie Barton, who, after an illness of a few days, departed this life January 16, 1899. Mrs. Barton, nee Gatlin, was born 1851, and has lived her life in this community, endearing herself to all who know her. As a child she was mild, gentle and lovable; she grew into young womanhoon (spelling original) loved and honored by her associated, and in 1871 was married to Arthur C. Barton. She was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church South, a devoted member, of which she remained until her death. She was one of the truest Christians it has ever been our privilege to meet. No one could know her without feeling the bearing influence of her sweet Christian spirit. Words are enadequate (spelling original) to enumerate her many virtues. Modest and unassuming, yet a heroine among women, for each day found her ready and waiting every duty devoting upon her. Her life was one grand sermon for Christ and Christianity; her death a great lesson on immortality. After her husband's death, three years ago, she moved to Austin for the purpose of educating her youngest child, but returned the first of January, to her farm, three miles from Buda, where she died surrounded by her children, two sons and two daughters. She was laid to rest in the Barton graveyard. She is dead: We shall no more see her sweet face nor hear her gentle voice, yet the influence of her grand life lives in the hearts of all who knew her and shall pass on down the aisle of future ages. Her glorified spirit has passed over beyond the dark River, and has joined the bright throng around the great white throne. To the bereaved children, our hearts go out in love and sympathy; but they grieve (not) as they without hope, for they know mother is in Heaven watching and waiting to welcome them home.
