His mother was Mary Ann "Polly" DuPree who at age 16 married the much older Joseph Koon who was an architect working on the South Carolina Statehouse. Polly Dupree's wealthy family was against the union and disowned her. Soon after Samuel's birth, his father was killed and Polly went to live with her brother, Lewis DuPree. They later moved to Georgia and joined the Pitts' Caravan to Texas in the 1840's. Samuel became a business partner with John Pitts and signed a number of land documents in Georgia as "Samuel Reid Koon." When they left the United States during the depression of the 1840's (Koon and Pitts oweing a great deal of money to a number of people in Georgia), they headed to Texas to start a new life. Polly Koon later married a blind Methodist minister by the name of Ogletree. The families settled on some land in Grimes County and the family cemetery on the "plantation" there still has the graves of Polly, Lewis and other members of the Koon-Dupree Family. Upon entering the Republic of Texas, Samuel changed his name to "Kone" and married John Pitts' daughter, Sylvira Rebecca. Within a few years, they resettled in Hays County where descendants of Samuel and Sylvira Rebecca Pitts Kone live today. Samuel Reid Kone served in the Texas cavalry and died in 1877 of the wounds he received in the Civil War.
