After fleeing the Charleston area during the War of 1812, the family settled in Georgia where John Drayton became a prosperous land owner and was eventually appointed to the Georgia Legislature. A crushing depression his the United States in the 1830's and Pitt's left the country to come to the new Republic of Texas at the urging of his old friend Mirabeau B. Lamar. The family first settled near Washington on the Brazos, then moved to San Marcos where Pitts soon took the position of Adjutant General in Governor Woods' administration. He later bought some land from his friend Edward Burleson and settled in the San Marcos area in a stretch of land known as "Stringtown" because of how the homes were situated. Always the speculator, he was also the founder of the town of "Pittsburg" which was later moved slightly and renamed "Blanco." Pitts died in 1861 near Onion Creek while returning from a succession convention. Although he and his wife had 11 children, only three (all daughters) lived to adulthood. He was married to Eliza Permilia Daves Pitts who predeceased him in 1851.
