Pickens This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Bunny Shumate Freeman Fourls1223@aol.com ********************************************* Copyright. We have been furnished very little information concerning his birthplace, family history etc. He was born in Alabama in 1828. Came to Henderson county in 1857 and settled upon the place where he now resides. HI is a man of sterling integrity, persistent industry and of deep religious convictions. He has raised a large family of children, all of whom are and were good men and women and are all doing well. Two daughters, Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Henry, are wives of leading merchants of Athens. One son, Davis, is one of our best citizens and, like his father, a very successful farmer. One son, Albert, who died last fall, was a young man of great promise and ability. We have no particulars at hand concerning all the members of his family. Mr. Pickens' live would be a fruitful topic for a book showing that intelligent farming is the most independent as well as the most profitable business. A country ought to be judged by the success of such man as he, since a failure to come up to what he has accomplished is chargeable in every instance to the man and not to the county. And judging Henderson county by such men as he, it is one of the best counties in East Texas. We expect in the near future to write up fully a lot o our farmers as the best and most correct methods of advertising our county, and when we do this we will give Mr. Pickens a fuller notice.
