Mrs. Melissa Mallard
The subject of this sketch deserves a place among the 
early settlers of Henderson. She was born in LaFayette 
county, Ala., in 1828. She and her husband came to 
Henderson county in 1846. They lived on two places; 
one known now as the Mitcham place, and the other 
Mallard Hill, four miles west of Athens.
She lived in Henderson county 14 years. She now lives
 in McLeanan county. She is expected to attend the present 
meeting of the old settlers on the 6th.
Mrs. Mallard was of a fine family. Her son, D. R. Mallard, 
now resides in Athens and has a good business as paper 
hanger and painter. We are sorry we have no further data 
of her and family. Her husband, A. F. Mallard, was county 
surveyor of the county one or two terms. His father was 
also prominent in the early work of organizing this county 
and locating the county site, as appears in the article in 
this issue by Judge Faulk.
