C. Walker Store, New York, Texas In J. J. Faulk's History of Henderson County (1929) is is recorded that Rev. J. C. Walker is the father of New York, Henderson County, Texas. He built a small house in 1860 near his home where Judge Joe A. Johnson now lives (the old Martin place) four miles north of LaRue, on the road leading from the present site of New York, on southeast toward old Fosterville. The house where New York started was surrounded by a neighborhood of good thrifty citizens. " The first time I ever saw it was in 1861. My mother went over the mountain by a pathway, by the home of Joe Cooper and carried me with her; it was about five miles west from where we lived. Dick Blackwell was the clerk and had charge of the business." When I started researching the old community of New York, several old timers denied that Rev. Walker had a store in the location mentioned. While helping Mrs. Rose Strong of Longview, Texas on her families of Walkers, Otts, Splawns and Foresters, Rose decided to get a copy of Rev. Walker's probate record. All of the merchandise in the store was listed, which was extensive. For example, there were yards and yards of grey ribbon, light grey ribbon, and dark grey ribbon. The list is much to long to list. His list of promissory notes and accounts gave proof that his store was used by many communities. The list is like reading a list of the settlers of New York, Myrtle Springs, Leauguville, New Hope, Baxter, Fincastle, Larue and Poyner Communities of today. There is no proof of which family moved into the New York Communities as REV. Walker bought land about the same time as the families of Reynolds, Otts and Foresters. J. J. Faulk recorded, "Of course this little store dried up during the war from about January 1862 to May 1865. After that the town was moved and set up business where New York now stands." The location of the present day store at New York is still in this location. Many of the families that settled in Henderson County lived in Smith County before moving into this county. On the list of Rev. Walker's the families of Key's, Dr. Hall and Dingler lived in Smith County. On the list of notes are some sales of land. George C. Keys bought his land from Rev. Walker and the keys grandchildren are still living on his property. Notes belonging to J. C. Walker, New York, Texas Name Date Amount Rogers, E. P. 6 Mar 1883 $480.66 Rogers, E.
