Members of the Current Literature Club and Athens Study Club have plans for the construction of a publish library for Athens. It is understood that a very valuable piece of ground just off the square will be donated provided sufficient funds can be raised. Everybody is urgently requested to attend this meeting --------------------------------------- SCOUTS MEET WHERE MAJ. MARTIN RECRUITED MEN The boy scouts hiked out to the Caldwell picnic grounds last Friday three and a half miles from town. They were accompanied by Scoutmaster Ford. During their stay Mr. Caldwell addressed the boys, telling them that their camp site was one on which Major Martin recruited men for the Civil War. Later the boys held Kangaroo Court, the victim being Percy Larkin, who was charged with improperly use of hatchet and trying to be a scout. He was convicted and put through the spanking machine. They remained in camp until about 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon and all report a royal time. Some of the boys took a spin to Murchison on their wheels. ---------------------------------------- SOMETHING DOING SURE Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Green went to Athens Tuesday afternoon over the new public road from Tyler to Athens. the road is fine and the weather was just right to make overland travel pleasant. We stopped on the way at Chandler, Brownsboro and Murchison. These towns are all growing and evidences of good trade are noticeable to the observer. Much new land is in cultivation on this road, and nearly all fields have been turned. Forty years ago (1877) there were no towns and but a dozen or so homes on the road from Tyler to Athens; but now one is in a lane most all the distance, with farms on both sides, many of them well improved. Athens is one of the prettiest towns in Texas and one which evidences that its inhabitants are enterprising and prosperous. After reaching the Deen Hotel, owned and conducted by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Deen--the best hotel in Texas--and meeting many friends, the editor and his wife left at 6:30 for their home in Tyler, arriving at 8:40 p.m. The country along the road looks good and the drive was without a single mishap---Tyler Signal. **note today (2002) the trip to Tyler from Athens takes about 30 min. ---------------------------------------------------------- BIG CROWD AT MEETING TODAY From Wednesday's Daily: Fully 300 people are in attendance at the Egg Circle and Peanut Growers meeting this afternoon. Farmers with their wives and daughters are taking a great interest. The large attendance shows that greater interest is being taken in intensidied farming than ever before. A year ago a corporals guard could not be mustered for such a meeting. ------------------------------------------------------------ SOCIETY Mrs. Adrian Ford Hostess Mrs. Adrian Ford when entertaing her 42 club, the Jolly Sixteen, Friday afternoon for a most delightful meeting, patronized Spring blossoms in her home decorations. The hostess formed her 42 game of the usual four tables promptly at 3 o'clock. At the close of ten games, Mrs. Ford assisted by her sisters, Mrs. Boyd and Miss Richardson, served a most tempting plate of salad olives, wafers, peas en cases and an ice. Those enjoying the game were Mesdames B. Sigler, Raymond Robbins, Ed Richardson, Joe Neff, J. J. Bishop, Homer Parsons, W. T. Conaly, C. H. Coleman, Macon Green, Gus Ferrell, Tom Faulk, Ross T. Phillipe and Misses Alice Richardson, Fayrene Richardson and S. John Murchison. --------------------------------------------------------------
