Her parents were Lester and Grace (Schocker) Scott. She married Leon Suthers in August of 1946. He passed away in 1986. She later married William Hardin in 1988. He passed away in 2010. Donna attended Baldwin High School and then graduated from Maquoketa High School. She started teaching after just one summer of college at Mt. St. Clare in Clinton and then chipped away at night school and summer school until earning her B. A. degree from Marycrest College in Davenport, She taught for 42 years, her first year as Miss Scott, the next 40 years as Mrs. Suthers and her last year as Mrs. Hardin. She is honored to have taught one year in the North Bend country school house, where her grandfather, A. L. Schocker had taught as a young man in the late 1800's. For fourteen years she taught in one-room country schools and then 28 years in the Maquoketa Community schools in town. Her first year in town her third grade class was held in the basement of the public library, then briefly at the Community Center, and then at Briggs Elementary. Donna has spent 23 winters in Donna, Texas. She has enjoyed fishing, square dancing, playing shuffleboard, camping and traveling and still plays cards. She has been a member of the Roadrunners Camping group for many years. Donna has a daughter, Connie (and Don) Patridge, both retired teachers living in Davenport, IA; a grandson Daniel in Rochester, Minn., and a grandson, Adam (and Laura) in Cheyenne, Wyo., and two great-grandchildren, David and Allison.
