Crossed out Granbury, Texas] Atticus Web A.M. President Mr. F.M. Grimes Blooming Grove, Texas Dear Bro Grimes, I am enclosing you Miss Mary's Bill for the first Quarter. School opened not so full, but with a very fine class of students and with a superior set of teachers. I have engaged a number of teachers since I saw you. I am delighted with them. The opening exercises left a good taste in the mouths of the folks, and every one say that the prospects are better for the school than it has been in years. Mary tells me that we are to have the privilege of a vist from you sometime soon. We shall be delighted to have you come often. With the very best wishes for you all. I am most cordially yours, Atticus Webb Sunday Eve 2:00pm Sept 20, 1908 My Dear Mother, As from two til four is the usual quiet hours, I will spend some of the time in writing to you. I wrote you some few days ago, suppose you have rec'd same by this time. I am getting along better than I expected, we have a good dinner today, had some pineapple sherbet, it sure was good. Also had some pork (a pork roast) As to uniforms, they will cost twenty dollars including cap. That sure is high too. It hardly seem slike we are able to pay such a price, but I leave the matter entirely with you all. If you think it best to take me out of the hall and put me a private boarding place, alright. As my course in school I have twenty hours per week, including following studies: History,Latin, English, Algebra. I think this is a very good course and as many hours as I can take. There is going to be an entertainment tomorrow night at the University for all the students. Well, it seems like winter will soon be here. I have worn my green and red dresses, they feel comfortable these cool mornings. Say, Mama as I had to get all new books you will have to send me some more money. I rec'd a long letter from Earl a few days ago. He is in Ft. Worth at present. [*her older brother] Zelda Seawright is back in school and a great many of the old students. I am standing wearing my clothes much better than I had expected. Miss McClure has arranged for negro women to come out from town to do our laundry. She says she thiks we ought to get it done for 75 cents a week. I sure hope we can that will beat what I paid last year by a long ways. Well, I guess Papa has told you all about our up and downs by this time. I will close hoping to hear from you real soon and all the news. With lots of love, Mary. =============== 10-21-08 Dear Bro Grimes: I have been thinking for some time that I would write you, but have been so busy. School is doing simply fine. New pupils are coming in every few days, and I am looking for quite a lot of new ones in at the opening of next Quarter. We could not ask for better prospects for the future. The town is better pleased with the work that we are doing than it has been in twenty years. The financial affairs are in at least safe conditions. Mary is doing much better work than she did last year, and says that she is doing better than she ever did before. But she gets quite homesick some time, and it is all that we can do to keep her at it. Mabel writes her from Waxahachie about boarding out in town, and having a big time, and that always makes her homesick. Then, I have made it a rule that the girls can't go out into town visiting homes. I think that this is positively necessary for the good of the school. I have had to deny her thisprivilege a few times lately, and she did not enjoy it. But I am sure that you would do likewise. It would not take long for the boys to go to wanting to go with her, if I let her go out, and I thought that you would not like that idea. Then, of course, we could not allow it. We are doing our very best to make it pleasant and profitable for her. She told me that you would visit us here soon, and I have been looking forward for some time for you. Hope that you can come quite soon. Mary got so homesick, and yet thought that she could take a trip to the Dallas Fair in place of going home, that I have decided to let her go there Friday, if I can make suitable arrangements for some one to accompany her. I trust that this will meet your approval. I thought that it would be best for her. With the best wishes for you all, and hoping to hear from you quite soon, and better to see you. I am yours, Atticus Webb,A.M. President of University Training School, Granbury, Texas) Stationery Granbury College Rev Atticus Webb A.M. Pres. Jan 9, 1910 Miss Mary Grimes Waxahachie, Texas [Mary is in Trinity University and wrote to Mrs. Webb requesting that she mail her the paints from her art class.] My dear Mary, I don't know when I have enjoyed anything so much as I have enjoyed reading your letter of the last few days. I read it and reread it and delivered all your messages of love to the proper persons. Well I believe that I told you in last letter that nearly the whole town was coming up here. Of course I meant the crowd of young people you knew and are interested in. You ask me if Prof [Maurice] Lefler and Miss Mary Walley were married. If you remember when you were here Prof L. and Miss Bess and Prof Henry and Miss Mary were sweethearts, so it has ever remained the same. Prof Lefler and Miss Bess were married two weeks ago tomorrow and are now keeping house in the Joiner house. If you remember that is the house next to Mr. White's house, on the same side of the street. They have been taking their meals here. I suppose they will continue to do so until they get their stove put in. Prof Henry and Miss Mary are still sweethearts and some predict that they will be married when school is out. Of course I know nothing about it. Prof Lefler and Miss Bess were married and in Ft. Worth before we knew anything about it. "Shirley Hall" is much changed since you were here. It has so many partitions and a skylight in it. "Atticus Hall" is just about the same. "Great" is here and is the same sweet girl we have always known her to be. We often talk of you, and of course you are still "Our Baby" and beloved as of yore. Do you remember Mr. Haralson who had a drug store and also a dry goods store. He is to buried out here in the Cemetery when the five oclock train comes in. They are looking for some relatives. He died at 9:30 Saturday morning. Some think he committed suicide others say he died of pneumonia however it is , it is awful bad for his wife and little daughter who is about your size, or about the size you were two years ago.. [Note: Arthur V. Haralson]10/11/1869-02/08/1945] And so you are rooming with Zelda [Seawright]. I always thought Zelda was a dear sweet little girl and Birdie ought to be if she's to room with you and Zelda. Yes, I teach art this year. My class is mostly in oil painting but I am doing pastel and watercolors and china painting. My course includes almost everything now that is usually taught in the school. Don't you want to go to Chicago with me if I go next summer? My little niece about your size is going. She is not going to study but just for the trip. Do you remember that my young brother was there when you were here. Well he married a Chicago girl on thanksgiving day so guess he will never come back to Texas except on a visit and not often that way as his business is there. He thinks he has the only girl. That is just as it should be. Well I have wrapped up your paints and addressed them and stamped them and have them just ready for mailing. Hope they will reach you alright. I believe I have answered all of your questions but one, that is about Lily. She was here in school until just about the end of first quarter and they telephoned her to come home her mother was very sick and she is till bad off. Somethig like inflammatory rheumatism. I heard that Lily passed through here about two or three weeks ago taking her mother to Ft. Worth to Sanitarium. I have heard nothing personal from her since. I want to write her tonight if I can. Well I must close. Give my love to Mabel, Zelda, Birdie and keep lots of love for yourself. Write me another long sweet letter sometime and remember to your Pappa, Mama, brothers, and sister, the first letter you write home. Lovingly, Mattie Webb Mrs. Mattie Webb
