All the obituaries that are added, have been taken from the book,"Hopkins County Obituaries Prior to 1939" by June E. Tuck. In the early years, Cumby was known as Black Jack Grove. Cumby is located on I 30, in the western part of Hopkins County. The cemetery is located just north east of the town site. Mr. Alexander was born in Fannin county, near Honey Grove, in 1845. Mrs. Alexander was born in 1850, six miles east of Greenville. They reared a large family of children, and all but one were present on this occasion, their names as follows: W. H. Alexander, Cleveland, Ohio; John Alexander, Maysville, Okla.; Mrs. Amanda Alcorn, Sulphur Springs; Mrs. George Robinson, Yantis; O. W. Alexander, Wewoka, Okla.; K. S. Alexander, lives with his parentsl; Elmer and Jessie were absent. The former lives in Okla., near Maysville and the later in New York. (Cumby Rustler, Feb. 4, 1916) Alexander, Martha A. - b. 2 Mar. 1850, d. 13 Feb. 1932 (Obit - Mrs. T. C. Alexander, age 81 yrs., died at her residence some three miles northwest of here in Hunt county, and was buried in Cumby cemetery. Mrs. Alexander was born March 2, 1850, and was the daughter of Henry Banta, a pioneer Missionary Baptist minster who located here about 1845. She was born in the same neighborhood in which she died. She was married to T. C. Alexander Jan. 18, 1866. Her husband died in Jan. 1931, at the of 90 and resided here since 1852. She was the mother of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters, all whom are living, except one son who died in infancy.) F. 1864 - 1914 (Obit - Jessie Alexander died Sunday at a Sanitraium in Greenville, Texas. He was buried in Cumby cemetery)(Read obit for Ida Belle Alexander for more information about J. F. Alexander) Alexander, Ida Belle - 1870 - 1934, o/s/w J. F. Alexander (Obit - Mrs. Jessie F. Alexander of Corpus Christi, and sister of Charlie and Oliver Mann, died suddenly Monday morning. The body was shipped to Cumby for burial. Her husband preceded her in death. She is survived by four sons, Paul, Lamesa; Roger, Dallas; Jessie, Little Rock, Ark.; and Weldon, Corpus Christi; one sister, Mrs. Mary Potts, and seven brothers. (Hopkins Co., Echo, Mar. 16, 1934) Later reported in a Cumby news column - Mrs. Alexander, the wife of the late Jessie F. Alexander, died at her home in Corpus Christi, Mar. 12 1934, Services were conducted by Rev. Jones in Cumby. It so happened that Rev Jones had also assisted at the funeral, at this place, of Mr. J. F. Alexander. Oct. 1914. Mrs. Alexander was the daughter of the late John Mann, and was born a couple miles north of Ridgeway, Jan. 2, 1870. She married Mr. Alexander in the latter 80's. In the summer of 1892, they moved to this place (then Black Jack Grove) and that Fall, in connection with Mr. Milt Branom of this place, entered the dry goods business here. During the time the family resided here, Mr. Alexander was in business with, at different times, in addition to Mr. Branom, G. W. Holland and the late S. D. Greaves. He moved from here in 1911, returning in poor health in the summer of 1914, and dying in October of that year.) Barker, a prominent citizen of Cumby, passed to his eternal reward last Thursday. He was born in Hamilton County, Illinois, Oct. 1, 1859. He married in Illinois in 1890, and moved near Cumby in 1897, which has since been his home. He is he father of two sons, Chalon and Herbert, the latter having been postmaster at Cumby from July 1925, until March of this year. Mr. Barker conducted a produce business here for many years. His wife died in June of 1923. His funeral was held under the big tabernacle, conducted by Rev. W. N. Carter, minister of the Church of Christ of Terrell, assisted by Rev. P. G. Hightower and Rev. G. She was about 65 years old and had spent most of her life in Cumby. She is survived by her husband and two children, Frank Weaver of Cumby and Mrs Gibb Gilchrist of Austin. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. W. W. Long of Sulphur Sprins and Mrs. C., A. Bridges of Glen Rose, and one brother, John Kennemur of Brashear. Funeral services and burial took place in Cumby.) Charter Members Hopkins Lodge No. 180 AF & AM, continuous member of 44 years to the day.) (Obit - Captian Merit Branum, born Feb. 18, 1825, d. Jan. 24, 1900, at his home near town. He fell from a wagon sometime in the forenoon, but his injuries were thought to be slight. Dr. McFarlin was called in and administered to him, but soon left the Captain cheerful and doing well. But in a few minutes he asked his son, Merit, to raise him up. He did so, but instead of relief the old man died at once in the arms of his son. Thus passed away, a hero of a thousand dangers and a pioneer of his race. Since 1839, he has been of and for Hopkins County and Texas. A Captain of the Texas Rangers, when to be a private in the ranks during the civil war was a mark of the strongest manhood. He looked after the welfare of the few settlements in this part of the state and made it possible for the whites to survive the fury of their Indian enemies. In peace and in war he has for these long years followed the path of duty as a lover of his country and his God.) Caudle Carpenter, Richard - 1837 - 1924 ( Obit - A pioneer citizen of Hopkins County died at his home north of Cumby late Christmas Eve, and the remains were buried at Cumby. He was 88 years old and a native of Ireland, having come to the United States when a young man. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in the army of Virginia. At the close of the civil war he went to New Orleans and came to Hopkins County about the year of 1868 and continued to make this county his home thereafter. He served four terms as commissioner of Hopkins County and one term as superintendent of the county farm. M. Black. Interment was made in the cemetery at Cumby, the birthplace of the deceased. His death came Thursday morning as he lay sleeping at his home on Washington street. His demise was unexpected as he had given no indication of feeling ill. The deceased was vice-president of the Texas Public Health Assoc., receiving the honor of that important post at a recent convention of the organization held in Abilene. He and Mrs. Cate, both attended the meeting. The was city health officer of this city. Dr. Cate was born near Black Jack Grove, now Cumby, Texas, May 1870, the son of Charles C. & Molly Cate. He first attended medical school in Memphis, Tennessee, later going to the Oklahoma City Medical College. He became a medical doctor in 1917, when he removed to Commerce, where he resided till his death. Early in his career he wed Miss Annie Titus. To this union were born the following children: Graham T. Cate of Commerce, Mrs. Hydah Griffitts of Commerce, W. R. Cate, Jr. of Austin, and Charles Cate of Borger. Mrs. Cate also survives. His body was accompanied from Denver by his sisters, Misses Lottie and Ruby, and were met at Ft. Worth by his brothers, Henry and Sherwood. Four of his sisters were with him at his death, Misses Effie and Bessie, and Mrs. Austin of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Mrs. Joe Lowe of Cumby. He was born near Daingerfield, but, with his family, moved to Hopkins County 68 years ago. He was a member of the Texas Rangers for two years, and fought valiantly for the Confederate Army for four long years. He carried the chain when the town of Greenville was surveyed, and was deputy sheriff when the county seat of Hopkins County was moved from Old Tarrant to Sulphur Springs. In fact, he is older than the State of Texas, having been born under the Republic of Texas two years before Texas became a State. He has lived in Cumby longer than any other man, and has raised a family of splendid sons and daughters; his wife having already preceded him to the Great Beyond. Guinn died Thursday afternoon (11 Ap. 1929)of last week after an illness of nearly two months. He was stricken on the streets of Cumby about February 20, and after having been carried home, never left his bed again. Mr. Guinn had resided in Cumby twelve years, moving here from Quinlan, Hunt County, to have charge of the affairs of the Cumby Mercantile Co. which at the time was one of the largest mercantile firms of this section of the state. Prior to coming here Mr. Guinn was business manager for the T. B. Keasler firm of Quinlan for two years, having previously been connected with Mr. Keasler^Òs business at Hughes Springs in Cass County for more than 25 years. Mr. Guinn was a man of keen business foresight and was a sound reasoner of business problems. During his residence here he has been connected with the banks of Cumby as director and was active in the affairs of these institutions. Mr. Guinn was married first in 1882, his first wife having died in 1925. He later was married to the wife that survives. He is also survived by three sons and three daughters, R. M. of Cumby, C. A. of Commerce, Joe of Dallas, Mrs. Eva Mashburn of Dallas, and Miss Blanche of Cumby. He had long been a member of the Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, being conducted by Rev. J.H. Woodard, assisted by Rev. Alex Hubbard, pastor of the local Methodist Church. Harris, pioneer citizen of Hopkins County, died at his home in Cumby, Jly. 19, 1934, following a stroke of apoplexy Tuesday morning. He had passed his 73rd milepost, having been born in Cape Gibordeau at Neely’s Laning in Mississippi. He came to Texas as a young man, lived a short time at Pilot Point and then at Austin before moving to Cumby nearly half a century ago. He established the Harris Hardware store more than 44 years ago and continued business under the same name until the time of his death; it being the oldest business establishment in Hopkins County. Soon after coming to Cumby he married Miss Jennie Holderness, daughter of Dr. & Mrs. R. C. Holderness, in a double wedding ceremony with Mr. Verge Downing and Miss Claudie Currin, now of Durant, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife and a foster son, Dr. Harris Connor, of Cleveland. Mr. Harris was never a member of any church, but one of the most active workers among church people. He was on the building committee of the present Methodist Chruch. King of Cumby, died February 5, 1909, at the home of his sister in Omaha, Texas, of pneumonia. Mr. King passed through this city enroute for Omaha on business. He was taken violently ill that night and died on Friday night following. His remains were shipped to Cumby and laid to rest in the Cumby cemetery. Capt. King was born in Marion County, Tennessee, in 1842, and has lived in Texas since 1846. He served in the 9th Texas Infantry under the Confederate flag throughout the war, losing an arm in one of the battles around Vicksburg. By profession he was a lawyer and a number of years ago was county attorney of Titus county. Later he served as assessor of Franklin county, when a few years ago he moved to Cumby. He was in his 67th year and leaves a son, Henry King, and two daughters, Mrs. Kyle Cross and Mrs Hugh Green of Cumby. He was a member of Gen. Joe Wheeler Camp, C. S. V. Cumby, Texas. He had been under the care of physician for some time but was confined to the bed only a few weeks, death being due to softening of the brain. He had been a resident of Cumby since 1884, moving here from Peerless. Was born in Missouri and was 78 years of age. He came to Texas as a boy. He married Miss Frances Sayle who died three years ago. He was married twice since then, but leaves no children except by his first marriage. To this union five sons and two daughters were born, two sons being dead. The children living are: J Lindley, Cumby; Dr. Robert Lindley, Dallas; Dr. Will Lindley and Mrs. Luke Rash, Terrell; and Mrs. Nettie Sherman, Shawnee, Okla. Mr. Lindley was considered one of the wealthiest men in Hopkins County. He owned a great deal of land, as well as valuable town property here and elsewhere. Interment was made in the Cumby cemetery. McFARLIN died at an early hour Monday morning at the home of Mrs. Gordon on east Main Street. He and Mrs. McFarlin came here a few weeks ago from their home in South Texas, and while his condition was known to be serious, he had been able to be up. He came to Texas from Missouri with his father^Òs family when a boy, locating in Red River County. He was well known in Cumby where he resided and practiced medicine many years, having located here when the town was known as Black Jack Grove. Deceased had been married four times and survived all of his wives except the last one. His first wife, who was not known here, died in California; the second was a Miss Rowell, whose parents lived at Emblem, this county; the third was a daughter of Capt. M. Branom of Cumby; the fourth a Miss Heweitt, also of this place. He is survived by a brother living in West Texas, and two children, a daughter in California, and a son in West Texas, both by his first wife. Eight years ago he moved from Cumby to South Texas where a few years later he was compelled to give up the practice of medicine because of failing health. He was nearly 72 years of age at the time of his death. Interment was made in the Cumby cemetery with funeral services conducted by Revs. Rea and McGuire.) Mrs. Palmer lived just north of Cumby for a great many years and reared her family here, Mrs. B. F. Ashcroft of Sulphur Springs being one of the children. For several years she had made her home at Ardmore with her children, living to the extreme age of 80 years. Her son, Otis Palmer, and her grand-daughter, Miss Gladys Williamson, came with the remains. Will Rash and wife, Ashcroft, and Bloomer Rash and wife of Sulphur Springs, and others attended the funeral. A large number of people accompanied the coffin to the home of Mrs. McKinney and attended the services at the grave on Monday. PARDUE was born in Perry County, Mississippi, in 1835, educated in Green County Salem High School; then engaged in the mercantile business in Mobile, Alabama, until the beginning of the civil war. He then enlisted and became Captain of Co. C 7th Mississippi Battalion. Soon after the close of the war he came to Collins County, Texas, and taught school two years; then attended medical lectures and graduated at Tulane Medical College in New Orleans; returned to Texas and took up his profession, which he has since followed. He later engaged in the drug business at Nevada, Texas. In 1894, he was married to Miss Bell D. Binford of the same place, to which union was born two children. Wife and children survive. M. - 1873 - 1932 ( Obit - C. M. Patton, pioneer citizen, leading banker, and financier of Cumby, died at his home in that town Tuesday night after a lingering illness. He was about 60 years old, having been born in the State of Mississippi. He came to Cumby when a young man and soon became one of the foremost men of the town. For many years he was actively connected with the banking interest of the town and other banks in this part of the state. He is survived by his wife, one son, Edwin Patton, and two daughters, Miss Grace Patton and Miss Ada Patton. Services will be held in Cumby with burial in the cemetery at that place.) Patton, of that city, died in Greenville Monday night. She had been ill since early in December, and was carried to Greenville for treatment about a week ago. Mrs. Patton, nee Miss Lena Brewer, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. J. A. Brewer, pioneer Cumby residents, was one of Cumby’s most prominent women. She had been a resident of Cumby all her life and a member of the First Christian Church of Cumby since girlhood. She is survived by three children, Miss Grace Patton of the East Texas State Teachers College Faculty, Commerce; Miss Ada Patton, Cumby; Edwin Patton, National Bank Examiner; and one brother, W. E. Reed - Cumby, Texas, June 24, 1929 - A victim of mistaken identity, Mrs. W. E. Reed of this city, was shot and killed Monday by Mrs. Ocar Cross. Mrs. Cross surrendered to officers at once and told County Attorney Emmet Thornton she had killed the wrong woman. Mrs. Cross was liberated later on $10,000. bond after being carried to Sulphur Springs in custody of the sheriff’s force. The shooting occurred on Main street in front of the post office, Mrs. Cross firing four times. One of the bullets struck Mrs. Reed in the head, killing her instantly. County Attorney Thornton said Mrs. Cross had made a statement to him, saying the bullets were intended for a Dallas woman who was supposed to be in the vicinity. The prosecutor said that Mrs. Cross had told him, " I was neither a friend nor enemy of Mrs. Reed and my killing her was not intentional. I have such trouble with __________, as in my opinion warranted my act in the shooting, and the shooting of Mrs. Reed, as heretofore related, was accidental." Both women have husbands and children. Mrs. Reed, who was forty years old, is survived by a daughter. Mrs. Cross is the mother of three children. She is about 35 years old.) He had been under the care of his physician and was thought to be improving. He was born in the western part of Hopkins County near the town of Cumby and had lived in the county all his life, being 55 years old at the time of his death. He had served as tax collector of Hopkins County for two terms and county surveyor many years, bing regarded as one of the most efficient land surveyor in this part of the county. He volunteered in the Spanish-American War and saw service till the close of the war. Many years ago, he, with his wife, moved to Sulphur Springs where he has continued to live since. Besides his wife, who was Miss Nora Cross before her marriage, he is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Earl Christian, Strawn, Texas; Charley Rippy, Bryan; Ben Ramey Rippy, Misses Ruby, Grace Jane, and Rose Nell, who live at home. He is also survived by one brother, Dan Rippy, and the following sisters: Mrs. R. F. Currin, Dallas; Mrs. H. A. Shaw, West Texas; Mrs. John Greaves and Mrs. J. F. Branom, Cumby. He was born in Missouri and came to Texas when but a boy, and died at the advanced age of 78. He served in the Confederate Army as a volunteer, private soldier, going out from Hopkins County and fought till the end. He united with the Baptist Church. His children were all present at the funeral. He leaves a wife and eleven children. He was buried in the Cumby cemetery.
