              Greenpond Cemetery

Greenpond cemetery was first indexed in the 1970's. Has been undated and
corrected July 2004

From I 30, take Hwy 154 south, at first red light, turn left on Hay 11, turn
right on FM road 1567, turn left 2324, cemetery is beside the church.

Blalock, T. N. - b. 5 Mar. 1838, d. 28 May 1913( Obit - Newton Blalock died at
his home near Green Pond, May 28, 1913, at the age of 75 years. He was born in
Carroll Co., Georgia, March 5, 1838. His father died when he was only six
years old. In 1865, he came to Smith County, Texas. The following year he was
married to Miss Matilda Bowen. He came to Hopkins County in 1869 and lived in
the same community until his death. He served in the Confederate Army for four
years under R. E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, being a member of the ninth
Louisiana Regiment. He was in the first battle of Manassas Junction and
Gettysburg together with other battles in Virginia; was a prisoner at Point
Lookout for six months and guarded by negro soldiers who showed the prisoners
no mercy. While in prison he made mud with his feet, of which he made bricks
which he sold at one dollar per hundred to buy bread to preserve life. He came
out of the prison with the first five hundred men who were paroled or
exchanged. He was the first member of his family to depart this life. He
leaves a wife and seven children, two daughters and five sons; all grown and
married.. Burial in Greenpond cemetery.)

Coker, Ruby Thurmon - 1922 - 1939 (Obit - Mrs. Ruby Nell Coker was born Feb.
18, 1922, and died March 12, 1939. She was married to Louie Coker, July 4,
1936. She lived a devoted wife for only two short years. Having to give up her
precious infant son seemed to bring grief to her. She professed faith in
Christ in her early childhood. She was at the home of Mrs. Coker when she
died. She leaves a husband, Louie Coker; a mother and father, Mr. & Mrs. D.
A.Thurmon; two sisters, Mary Lena Swindel and Ottie Eula Ponder, two brothers,
D. A. Thurmon and Hurley Thurmon. She was laid to rest beside her infant son
at Green Pond cemetery.)

the Greenpond community. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. W. Lawson Coker.
Suzan Gilliam was the name of her mother before marriage. She was married to
G. M. Friddle at Reily Springs, March 29, 1908. She had been a member of the
Baptist church for over 15 years. She leaves to mourn her death three
brothers, Buddie Coker, Sulphur Bluff; Bill Coker, Como; and Philip Coker,
Como; one sister, Mrs. Jim Blalock, Sulphur Bluff; five sons, Marvin Friddle,
Sibern Friddle, Willard Friddle, Raymond Friddle, and little Jack Friddle; and
three daughers, Mrs. Gene Burns, Mrs. Guy Franks, and little May Friddle,
Como. Final rites were conducted at the Greenpond cemetery with the Rev. Ruby
Stracener in charge of the services)

Hicks, Rachel - 1856 - 1929, o/s/w G. W. Hicks (Obit - Rachel Hicks, nee
Rachel Walker, was born Feb. 16, 1856, near Chattanooga, Tennessee, from which
place she with her mother, brother, and sisters moved to Arkansas in her early
girlhood. There she was married to G. W. Hicks on Oct. 12, 1873, and to this
union nine children were born, two of them having preceded their mother in
death, one at the age of 46 years and the other in infancy. In 1890, they came
to Texas and finally settled five miles south of Como, near Green Pond where
they lived at the time of her death. Besides 47 grandchildren and 26 great-
grandchildren, her husband and the following children survive her: Mrs.
Florence Hobbs, J. W. Hicks, H. L. Hicks, Miss Eve Hicks, Azriah Hicks, all of
Green Pond; Mrs. Belle Vanderslice, Avinger, Texas; and J. P. Hicks, Sulphur
Springs, Texas. Also two sisters and one brother of Scranton, Arkansas,
survive her. She departed this life Sept. 27, 1929. Her remains were laid to
rest in the Green Pond cemetery, conducted by her pastor, Rev. A. J. Findley)
