Tuck (Edited) DIKE, TEXAS Dike, Texas, is situated fourteen miles north west of Sulphur Springs, and is in the heart of one of the richest and most highly productive agricultural section in Hopkins county. Included in Dike community are the rich valleys of Cross Timber Creek on the north and Caney Creek on the south. Great farms cover these valleys for a stretch of ten miles where cotton, corn, and ribbon cane are grown to perfection. Many modern and splendid homes, well kept farms and the best county roads makes the citizens of Dike proud of their community. Dike has four good stores, one blacksmith shop, one gin, a Christian Church, a Methodist church, and a splendid school. Dike is the issuing office of three Rural Routes and two Star Routes that distributes mail over a vast area of the country. Dike has a telephone exchange and system connecting the community with all parts of the county. W. E. McLAUGHLIN - GENERAL MERCHANDISE W. E. McLaughlin, dealer in merchandise at Dike is a man who is willing to take the lead and put his shoulders to the wheel whenever the pinch comes. Mr. McLaughlin moved to Dike 11 years ago and have been doing a large and successful business. When he went to Dike, he found a great deal of the trade in the community going to other towns. He sought the reason why. He found that a number of farmers were compelled to buy supplies on Fall terms. He then immediately began a Fall credit business and has been extending accommodation to his trade along this line ever since. Another thing about "Mac", as he is familiarly known, he always looks on the bright side of things, and always carried a welcoming smile and glad hand for his friends and customers. J. B. MORRIS - GENERAL MERCHANDISE The name J. B. Morris is closely associated with any and everything that pertains to the best interest of Dike. He engaged in the general merchandising business at Dike in 1908, and the record of his business has been one of success and fair dealing. He handles a large and complete line of Dry Goods, Notions, Groceries, Hardware, etc., and does a big credit business through the spring and summer months, thus helping the farmers through the dull season. JESSE A. RASURE - STAPLE AND FANCY GROCERIES - POSTMASTER Jesse A. Rasure is a prominent and successful merchant at Dike. Ten years ago he started in business at Dike with a $50.00 stock; today his stock will invoice around $1,500. He has been Postmaster of Dike for the past ten years. SULPHUR BLUFF, TEXAS A village of 300 inhabitants, is situated on a beautiful prairie 24 miles northeast of Sulphur Springs and 19 miles northwest of Mt. Vernon. Sulphur Bluff has three general merchandise stores, drug store, two-chair barber shop, telephone exchange, three church buildings, hotel, one of the most up-to-date mill and gins in the county, two blacksmith shops, Masonic Hall, and up-to- date W. O. W. Hall just completed, a Bank, Dental Office, Meat Market and Restaurant. It has one of the best school buildings in the county. The first floor has four class rooms and two cloak rooms, and ample halls and two stairways. The second floor has a music room, a library, and an auditorium with a floor space of 4400 square feet, seated with folding chairs. They have a seven month school and four literary teachers and a music teacher. HINNANT STORE - DRY GOODS, CLOTHING, SHOES, HATS, GROCERIES, ETC. One of the oldest, most stable and successful stores at Sulphur Bluff is that of Mrs. Geo. A. Hinnant, now under the management of W. A. Hinnant. This business has been in successful operation at Sulphur Bluff since 1885. Mr. Hinnant has been active manager of this store for a number of years. FIRST STATE BANK The First State Bank at Sulphur Bluff was organized in 1904, with a capital of $10,000. The officers are Dr. J. M. Fleming, President; C. E. Mahaffey, Vice- President; O. H. Mahaffey, Cashier. Directors are: J. M. Fleming, C. E. Mahaffey, O. H. Mahaffey, C. A. Sims, and J. L. Rutherford. The Bank now has a capital surplus and undivided profits of $27,713., and recent statement showed its deposits to be $69,267.05. J. W. ST. CLAIR - DRY GOODS AND GENERAL MERCHANDISE We find J. W. St.Clair to have a modern up-to-date general merchandise store. His shelves are stocked with all sorts of Dry Goods, Clothing, Shoes, Hats, Notions, Etc. Mr. St. Clair has been in business in Sulphur Bluff since 1898. FLORA, TEXAS W. M. JOHNSON - GENERAL MERCHANDISE W. M. Johnson carries a well assorted stock of general merchandise. Mr. Johnson is a plain spoken, sincere man; he makes few boasts and does not claim to handle the "biggest stock in the county." He has been in business at Flora for about eight years, and stands well in the Flora community and has many friends.
