BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE HUGH BARCLAY FAMILY

The pioneer Hugh Barclay family came to Texas in 1845. Hugh Barclay was a
Missourian by birth, being born May 29, 1789, the year George Washington
was made president of the United States. Margaret Groff, his wife, was
born in Missouri June 5, 1797, the year Washington^Òs second term as
president expired. They were married March 26, 1812, the year of the
beginning of the second war with Great Britain. They spent more than 30
years of their married life in the native state were thirteen children
were born to their union. First, Sarah Pursley, born Jan. 21, 1813.
Andrew Groff - April 26, 1815. Nancy Ann Charlotte - Aug. 7, 1817. Henry
Thomas - Oct. 6, 1819. Statira - Dec. 9, 1821. Stephen C. - Dec. 6, 1823
. Margaret - July 30, 1826. Harriett - Dec. 17, 1828. John S. T. - Feb.
21, 1832 . Balser G. - Dec. 13, 1833. Joseph H. - Feb. 1, 1836. Hattie
Elizabeth - March 13, 1838. Martha (Patsy) - Aug. 11, 1840.

When Hug and Margaret Barclay came to Texas they made a settlement just
north of the Lee Hargrave home place, the land now owned and occupied by
Elzy (sic) Hargrave and his father, Price Hargrave. Here they remained
till death came. He died about 1850, she in 1856. Both are buried at the
McFall graveyard.

Sarah Pursley (Sallie) married John Newman Bartlett in Missouri December
19, 1833. He was born Dec. 10, 1805. He died March 9, 1853. To their
union were given nine children; Mary Ann Margaret, married Wesley France.
They were parents to Warrick, Lewis and Denton France with Mrs. Mollie
Brant and Mrs. Lizzie Nation and others (sic.) Martha Harriet married H.
Lee Hargrave, parents of Mrs. Mollie Farmer, Mrs. Bettie Jobe, Mrs. Eva
Bryant, Mrs. Helen Crisp, Eli and Lewis Hargrave. Henry Thomas married
Celia Pickle, parents to Perry and Melvin Bartlett, Mrs. Mary Pendleton
and Mrs. Daisy McFadden. Mildred Mariah married Jim Clark, parents to
Mrs. Lou Ella Roy, Mrs. Minnie Kiker and Joe Clark. Susan Frances married
John Clark, parents to Ned and Johnnie Clark. Harriet Rachel married
Jasper Shrode, parents to Mattie Kate and Lucy. Mattie married Jim
Chapman, Kate married Arthur Brown. Rachel^Òs second marriage was to
Charlie Marshall, parents to Johnnie, Maud Lancaster and Flossie. Elijah
Rufus grew to manhood, never married, was robbed and murdered on the way
from here to Jefferson. Polina Elizabeth married Frank Pickle, parents to
Helen Shrode, Dollie Marlie and others.

Andrew Groff Barclay first married Celia Southerland. Three children,
Charlotte, Mary and Hugh. Hugh died in battle during the Civil War.
Charlotte married Jack Brady, parents to Sim, Tom, Miller and Marion
Brady. Mrs. Myra Kirkbride and Mrs. Mollie Smiddy. Mary married John
Compton, parents to Lila and Oda Compton. Uncle Andy was the grandfather
of Oda Compton. She married G. Bruce Mc Coy of Sulphur Bluff, first
trading post of Hopkins county, where they made their home for a number
of years. They had four children, one son, Wade, lost his life by a fall
from an oil derrick near Harlingen, Texas. He was unmarried. The
daughters, Louie Jobe, Lillian Bufkin and Lela.

John Compton^Òs first marriage was to Amanda Hargrave, sister of Lee and
Alfred Hargrave, parents to Edd and Mack Compton. His third marriage was
to Susan Frances Clark, mother of Ned Clark and granddaughter of Hugh
Barclay. They had one child, Minta May, married Walter Hinnant.

Henry T. Barclay came to Texas and located with his parents in 1845. He
became a very familiar character in his community, Pleasant Hill. He was
honest, upright and fair to his fellow man. In 1853 he made a trip to
Missouri and from that state brought his widowed sister, Sallie Bartlett,
to Texas, where she afterward made her home. He drove a two-horse team
with wagon, while she drove a pony to a one-horse wagon the entire
journey. In this same year he was married to Serelda, daughter of Uncle
Bille Hargrave. In less than twelve months after her marriage she passed
to her reward. They had one child, Serelda, married Billie Hudson and
died with her first child, Charlie. He died in young manhood.

Uncle Henry^Òs second marriage was to Caroline Neely-Brant, daughter of
Matthew Neely, widow of Jake Brant, and mother of J. Willis Brant and
Mrs. Bell Widows, all deceased. He was a stock farmer and blacksmith by
trade and his first home and only home was a log house north of Pleasant
Hill, now Nelta, in the woods on a hill overlooking Sulphur River bottom.
This house was built in 1852 by Enoch Chapman, a pioneer school teacher,
and one room was intact and used as living quarters just a few years ago.
In our younger days we have labored on the farm as a hireling for Uncle
Henry and have slept many nights and enjoyed many good meals in this log
house. We have heard him say that in those pioneer days he had stood in
his front yard and killed a deer. He was a wonderful character, always in
a good humor and never got in a hurry.

In 1846 he volunteered and joined the army under Gen. Zachery Taylor to
serve in the war with Mexico. He was engaged in the battle of Monterey
and saw the Mexican General, Ampudia, surrender his army to the American
officer. He also served in the war between the States, was a valiant
soldier and was never known to put up the white flag.

He had one child, Peggie, by his second wife. She married Charlie Kiker
and they were parents to Mrs. Dena Gill and Leonard Kiker.

Statira Barclay married Lige Wallace. Two children, Celia and Ben. Celia
married Henry McDowell, parents to Robert, John and Florence.

Margaret Barclay was married in 1842 to Campbell Burkhart, a Missouri
Irishman, one of the best men for muscular strength that we ever knew. He
had splendid physique and unusual manpower. He was a first-class hand at
house-raisings, log-rollings and rail-splittings, which were very common
in that day. Once it was wagered he could split a thousand rails in one
day. He put to work and they furnished him the timber and it is said that
he split 800 eight foot rails before the sun went down. He and Aunt
"Marg" came to Texas about 1850 where they raised the following children:
Lizzie married Bill Stubblefield, Martha married Joe Jones, Houston
married Nannie Clark, James married Isabell Clark, Joseph never married,
Christine married Jim Clark, and Solomon married Mollie Sells,
step-daughter to Uncle Ed Gardner. Lizzie was mother to Esther, Allie and
Mrs. Carrie Harris. Martha was mother to Billie, Jodie, and Mary
Jones-Shrode. Houston was father to Jimmie and Ila Burkhart. James was
father to Mrs. May Grove,, Stephen, John and Lumas. Christine was mother
to A. C. (Buddie) Clark and Mrs. Myra Hargrave. Sol was father to Dave,
Mrs. Mattie Melton, Mrs. Katie Vickers and Mrs. Corrie Spears.

Harriett Barclay married Alfred Hargrave Nov. 21, 1850. They raised six
children, three having died in childhood. Stephen Balser married Nannie
Henderson. One child, Glen, died young. The mother also died young. His
second marriage to Jessie Talkington-Kay. They have living Elmer and
Eldred (twins,) Sparks, Neal and Charlie. Joseph Glen married Paradina
Chapman. Children, Maggie (Moore,) Fred, Claud, Clair and Virgil. Le
married Martha Ann Honeyman. Children, Alfred and Onie. Mattie married
Sparks Alexander Pearce. Children, Mrs. Rosa Raines, Mrs. Lillian
Flippen, Mrs. Olive Coleman, Mrs. Susie Spears, Mrs. Myrtle Lou Clifton
and Paul Pearce. William Price first married Rosetta Johnson. One child,
Lizzie. Mother and child both died young. Second marriage to Cora
McKinzie. Children, Elzy, Marcellus (died when 18,) Jim D., John, Murrie
and Rose May Mahaffey. Benona married Myra Clark, children, Earnest and
Ercil.

Hattie Barclay married Ellis Chapman. Two children, Benjamin and Willis.
Ben married Emma Hadlock. Willis married Ida Small.

Captain Joe Barclay, youngest son in this family, born Feb. 1, 1836,
passed 100 years ago. He was a jolly good fellow, happy and jovial in all
his business and labors. He was full of funny jokes and always made merry
with his friends. He looked on the bright side of every question ever
hoping for something better in the future. His first wife, Melissa Moore,
died early in life. One child died young. His second wife was Sallie
Shanklin, a school teacher, sister to Tom and George Ross. She was mother
to Jennie Shanklin-Hartsfield and grandmother to John and Sim Hartsfield
and Mrs. W.P. Chandler. They were step-children to Uncle Joe Barclay. He
and Aunt Sallie raised three children, Stephen, deceased. Walter (Tump)
and Ida, Mrs. Jap Tucker. She was mother of Earnest Tucker and others.
His third and last wife was Aunt Mollie Barclay, now living on Church
street in Sulphur Springs. She was Mollie Hartsfield, a Tennessean (sic)
by birth, and came to Texas with her parents (sic) a widow Thornton after
the death of her husband, T. A. Thornton of that state (sic.) They had
one child, Agnes, who became the wife of Hubert Higdon. Uncle Joe and
Aunt Mollie were married in 1876. They spent many happy years together
and since his death, March 31, 1909, she as kept her home with her
children. Their surviving are Miss Mattie, an efficient nurse of this
town; Katherine, her sister; Mrs. Arch Tedford and Mrs. Jimmie Sickles.
Aunt Mollie is 86 years of age today, Sept. 7, 1936, and is till young
and active, making her own quilt blocks. She is a good soul. Long live
Aunt Mollie.

Martha Barclay (Aunt Patsy) born Aug. 11, 1840, was the baby child of
this family. When she was past 17 she was married to Isaac M. Chapman,
parents to Joe, Andy, Alfred, and Cal Chapman and Mrs. Bettie Logsdon.
Some of their grandchildren are Claud, Clifford and Guy Logsdon, Mrs.
Lula Wood and Mrs. Dollie Johns, also Nell and Gladys Chapman and others
that we fail to recall their first names. A great grandson, Eli Hargrave
