Harom Richers By Eli Hargrave Harom Richers, son of John Richers, is a native of Germany, born in the Province of Hanover, near its capitol, Hanover. He was the youngest of three children, two boys and one girl. His mother died when he was born in October 1868, and in 1870, his father came to America and settled at Galveston, Texas. Harom remained in Germany till he was ten years of age, when his father sent for him, bringing him to America and uniting him with the family at Galveston, his brother and sister having come to the father two years previous to this time. Here they remained for a time, the elder brother and sister making their home there. Harmon came to North Texas in 1889 and worked the first two years at or near Sulphur Bluff on the farm of I. Monroe Dawson. He afterwards worked on the farm of Alvin Gregg, and there is where I first knew him. He afterwards moved to Sulphur Springs where he labored for many years as shoemaker and shoe cobbler. In 1900, when the Galveston flood came, his brother was a member of the Galveston police force, was married and had two children. He with his family and sister, with their home and all their belongings, were drowned and destroyed in this storm. Harmon never heard from them again. He is the only surviving member of his immediate family, though he has one cousin living at Bay City, Texas. Mr. Richers never married. He enjoys distinction and rank of a 32nd Degree Mason - K. C. C. H. (Knight Commander of the Court of Honor,) being a member since 1900.
