All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** From the files of June Tuck AIKEN, DR. - A cancer doctor, was beaten to death with clubs by a man named Mooney, and a son of Judge Payne, and robbed of $600., near Sulphur Springs, last week. (The Christian Messenger, Jan. 26, 1876) Later reported - The murders have been caught and the money recovered. Sulphur Springs Gazette - James Payne, who murdered old Dr. Aiken six miles west of Sulphur Springs in January 1876, has been acquitted. (The Bonham news added - If he had stolen a horse, the probabilities are that he would have been hung on the spot.) (Bonham News, Aug. 24, 1877)
