McCORKLE NOTES BIRTHDAY (Sulphur Springs Gazette, Sept. 18, 1959) Mrs. Della Garret McCorkle, prominent pioneer citizen of Hopkins county, will observe her 90th birthday today at her home at 104 Putman Street. A native of Hopkins County, Mrs. McCorkle was born in Shady Grove, the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. G. M. Corbin. She was married to James A. Garrett 75 years ago and they lived and reared their family for three sons and three daughters in the Forest Academy community. Not only her family, but many friends know her as one who has served well doing good deeds of kindness for others. After Mr. Garrett’s death in 1931, a few years later she was married to H. C. McCorkle and the evening of their lives has been spent in a beautiful companionship, "living by the side of the road" being a friend and inspiration to all they came in contact with.Mr. McCorkle died last November. The past five years of Mrs. McCorkle’s life has been spent as a semi-invalid. She cannot walk, but her hands have been busy. Piecing quilts is a hobby of hers. Crocheting and novelty making are still others, as she labors for others. Jack Garrett of Coolidge, Ariz., and Louis Garrett of Casa Grand, Ariz., arrived by plane Saturday to be with her. A daughter, Ms. Kate Wells of Purcell, Okla., came earlier in the week. Other children are M. C. Garrett, Susie Mae Strasner, Ladelle Martin, Mrs. James W. Wells of Muskogee, Okla., is visiting with her also.
