All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** NORRIS, JOHN A., MR. - Of Sulphur Springs, was shot by some unknown person and instantly killed, Thursday night the 9th inst. Mr. Norris, was for many years a citizen of Gilmer in Upshur county. He leaves a large and very helpless family. (The Texas New Era, Oct. 18, 1879) The Christian Messenger, Oct. 22, 1879 - reported he was City Marshal of Sulphur Springs, and was shot dead. - Also reported that at 11 o’clock at night while City Marshel John Norris was taking a drink with a friend, someone outside the saloon shot Norris through the heart, killing him instantly, and escaped in the darkness. The assassin is supposed to be a friend of a man shot by Norris while resisting a marshal’s arrest.
