T. - Age 78, pioneer citizen of Hopkins County, died almost suddenly Wednesday from heart trouble following a decline in health for several months. J. T. (Uncle Tom) Beck was born near Gilmer, in Upshur County, on May 16, 1855, and moved to Hopkins county early in life where he continued to make his home. He was married to Cynthia Eliza Witham, July 15, 1881, who died December 26, 1918. To this union twelve children were born, eleven of whom survive, as follows: Jim, Boney, Witham and Fred Beck, and Mrs. Arthur Bailey, all of Shreveport, La; Barney Beck of Dallas; Mrs. Zeke Kitts, Mrs. Jeff Campbell, Miss Lynna, Miss Vera and Tom Beck, all of Sulphur Springs. He leaves one brother, Ed Beck, Sylvester, Texas, and one half-brother, Julius Beck of Pleasant Grove Community, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Henry Osborne of Shooks Chapel and Mrs. Ida Glover of California. Funeral services will be held at Pleasant Grove, with Rev. J. D. McClung in charge. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove cemetery. (Hopkins Co. Echo, Jan. 12, 1934)
