Dave Birthright was born and reared in Hopkins County and had engaged in merchandising here and at Birthright for many years. When he moved from Sulphur Springs, establishing a store 12 miles north, on the bald and lonesome prairie, many thought he was on the road to bankruptcy, but Dave Birthright was a big man, big hearted, broad-gauged and progressive in every way; he soon had people coming from many miles to trade with him; the little prairie town he started was named Birthright in his honor; business was good and Col. Dave continued to prosper. While he had only attained the age of 65 years he had seen much of life and was rich in experience. The funeral was conducted from the residence of Mrs. L. P. Caldwell on Davis street, with interment in the City cemetery. (Sulphur Springs Gazette, Oct. 15, 1915)
